She's seen like such a evil, cold-hearted person. I cannot stand her. Even though they try to make her seem like she has a heart once in a while I just cannot fathom being married or being a friend of such a callous person. She ruins the show. The husband, the kids, and the grandma are hilarious. She just makes me cringe.

If they took her out of the show then the series would definitely be far better than it is right now (not that great, imo). I don't know why Lewis and the kids (Evan and Emery) aren't the ones getting more time on-screen than her and Eddy.
P.S. Yes, the show is about Eddy first and foremost but the real Eddy said the show derailed so much off from the actual book so not like it matters.

shareI despise her character. Why Louis is married to someone who is as bossy, demanding, and unfriendly as her I'll never know. It'd be okay if she was funny but she isn't. She comes off as crass and a dark cloud hanging over the family.

shareShe's awesome and absolutely hilarious. She does a perfect impression of a stereotypical Asian mother...if you're in an Asian household or grew up with Asian friends, her personality is spot-on! I honestly don't understand how anyone can see her as Anti-western...she's just your typical 2nd/3rd generation Asian mother that still has a lot of her roots. She can be demanding/harsh but means well and loves her children.
If anything, she is my favorite character on the show.

I lived in China for yrs so I get the humour and I get where the writers are getting this stuff for the character. If you guys knew how get a job they are doing this shows would be #1. Constance Wu is drop dead gorgeous and my wife, who is Chinese, would kill me if she knew this but it would be worth it. My wife also loves this show and says it's very accurate.

I don't think she's evil. She's more like the general who keeps her family and business on a positive course because she takes responsibility for them which is a much better quality than someone who is "nice" but cares for no one but themselves. The burden she carries let's everyone else in the show have the luxury of taking life a little more lightly.

Exactly! I was the general in my marriage, not because I wanted to be but because somebody had to be in charge and know what the hell was happening with appointments, the kids' schooling, etc. Sometimes a mother is forced into this role because her husband can't or won't be the leader of the family.

Are you kidding me?? She's the highlight of the show! There's no comedy like cross cultural comedy. Apparently you grow up never met any foreign families, so you might think all families behaving the same as yours.
Jessica is a typical mom of oriental culture, who thinks she's looking out for the whole family, with everything else secondary. It is obvious that she wasn't an evil and cold hearted lady when Louis married her, but built up from playing the role of housewive. She is the focus of the show because everyone else in the family merged into the suburban culture, leaving only her to point out the cross culture jokes. Without her the show would be nothing.

Definitely not the highlight of the show. Every other character is better. Poor Louis. And it's not about just the family. She's mean to neighbors, strangers, etc. Just comes off as a terrible human being.
