Terrible Film

I went to this movie last night with my wife, she enjoyed it. However I thought that this was a dreadful movie full of cliches.
I found the main characters idiotic, unlikable and faceteous and the supporting cast was a waste of some very good actors who were unable to salvage anything from the bad scripting. I found myself glancing at my watch more than once, something I never do while I'm watching a movie
Save yourself from wasting 106 minutes of your life, rent the Commitments, it's broadly the same story but is actually worth watching

The Commitments was good, so underrated. Just wondering, was there any U2 music?

reply

No U2 music in this, though Bono was among those thanked in the end credits.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

reply

The Commitments - YES! Just came out of the cinema and was wondering what i could watch next in a similar vein (British/Music) and that's the one. Thought about watching Good Vibrations again but i've not seen The Commitments as an adult. Nice one.

reply

British!!! What's British about 'The Commitments' and 'Sing Street'. They are both Irish movies.

reply

What about Good Vibrations? I wanted to watch something British or about Music. The Commitments and Sing Street came under the latter category!

reply

Yep both irish films

reply

You don't sound like a very fun person

reply

i concur.

the important thing to remember is that i was never convicted.

reply

I thought it was a lovely movie. It drew an applause (by most) in my theater.

That you found the main characters "idiotic, unlikable and faceteous" is very, very obviously a statement about you and not about the movie. So why should we care? Why would you think that your personal reaction could possibly be of interest or value to any other human being, when we all have scores of favorable reviews and a very high IMDB rating to consider instead? Why, in fact, would you be coming here to announce your lack of empathy and sympathy to the rest of us?

OK, I understand that your wife probably wouldn't listen to your little rant, but in the future, when that happens, do the world a favor and just write yourself a note.

OK?

(Sorry about jumping down your particular throat when every film has threads as clueless as this one, but maybe it's time for reasonable people to start making this point with some regularity.)

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

reply

I'm sorry, I thought I was clear. idiotic, unlikable and faceteous is part of my critique of the film, I'm happy to clear that up for you as you seem confused. In any exchange of views and opinions, it's my experience that when anyone who makes personal statements about the other person, it usually means that they have no comprehensive opinion of their own. You have not made clear your opinion of this movie, just your opinion of me, which means nothing to me.

Frankly, sympathy and empathy are the baliwick of the weak willed and have no part to play in reality.

As for why my personal opinion could possibly be of interest or value to any other human being, I'm not sure that you understand how these message boards work.

My original post was very far from a rant, it was my opinion of a sub-par movie, I disliked it so much that this is my first review since 2009, yours is the one that would fall into that catagory.

You're clearly a lot of things, but I'm not sure that you should class yourself as reasonable and your desire to censor the opinion of anyone who doesn't agree with you tells me that you are overly enamoured with your own opinion and that you obviously think that your opinion is of more worth than others, how boring your world must be. Where's your sympathy and empathy? I wish the world was made of puppies, kittens and magical unicorns but it's not, I didn't make the world I only try to live in it

Your semi apology at the end of the post just tells me that you even lack the courage of your own convictions and you can't even snipe from the cover of your keyboard without feeling guilty.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to introduce you to the real world and I would remind you that the earth revolves around the Sun, it does not revolve around you

Stay lucky

Yikes, how awful.

Do you know if neither existed in human behavior our species would have ceased to exist long, long ago?

Oh what a day! What a lovely day!

Hey Matty - what a surprise to find you here!!!!

Did you like the movie?
(I absolutely loved it.)

Sounds like a personality disorder to me. Narcissistic Personality Disorder, perhaps. Certainly an antisocial disorder. You may want to get it treated. Or at least not have any children.

These are the words of a truly demented human being. Without these qualities, the human race would have ended with the Neanderthals. Even dolphins have gotten a handle on this concept. I feel terribly sorry for this wife of yours, but then again, what would you know about that?

reply

You found the main characters to be idiotic, unlikeable and facetious...But isn't that how most teenagers are in real life? ;-P

I really enjoyed this movie. It was super cute and full of humor. (There was a lot of laughter in my theatre and I heard whispered comments from people all around me expressing their enjoyment of the film.) For me, the music was what stood out the most. I loved it!

This was definitely a fun movie. It's a shame that most mainstream audiences won't even think to see it.

I honestly have no idea what the marketing department is doing here. I can understand a slow rolling out a la 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' but it doesn't seem like they're even trying that hard for some reason. For example they could have aimed to put the cast on the MTV Movie Awards singing one of the songs from the film. They could play songs from the film on the radio to get them into the social consciousness like the marketing team did for the first 'Footloose.' The critics love the film, every audience I see it with (young and old) love the film and have a big reaction to it. This could easily be sold as the next 'Footloose' (original) for a new generation, because it is an instant coming-of-age music classic. Plus, it could easily stand out from a perfect phenomenal counter-programming angle with it's release date currently, surrounded by loud and boisterous summer blockbusters is a smaller, independent coming-of-age film that's critically and audience beloved with great music to boot - basically, making it stand out in the marketplace for being different.

reply

I agree. As I was watching this gem I kept thinking that it was too good to be limited to a small art film venue. On the other hand, if it's not about superheros or body counts the box office options are limited.

That's exactly why it would bring in a lot more money - it's the perfect form of counter programming.

reply

Mediocrity appeals to the masses. Maybe you're correct. I wish you were however it's too Irish. And my last name is O'Leary.

reply

"I wish you were however it's too Irish."

I'm 100%, basically, American and saw it with two american audiences who reacted big to it, that's not to forget the critics as well. As an American, I didn't see anything really Irish about it - all places love music, all places have Catholic schools (I went to one), all places have garage bands, all places have 80s nostalgia, all places grew up with MTV, and some of these references were specifically American: Back To The Future, Rebel Without A Cause (James Dean), and Beverly Hills Cop.

Maybe it's that I'm not Irish that I can't see what was significantly Irish about it? But, everything I and the audience responded to were the very relatable human moments and pop culture references.

Yep... which is why they are better avoided. Paying to see them in movies seems like a waste of money.

Seeing that this film hss an astonishing 97 % rating on Rotten Tomato's

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sing_street/

And is also praised in almost every Newspaper Review or website review in the UK, US, AU , and IE that you can find, you must not have seen this film if you think its just facetious acting. In fact, the scenes with Connor and Raphina are so genuinely real in feeling that you forget they are acting and feel you are a bystander watching a real life teen love story.
Hell , legendary musicians like Sting and Bono praised the film and it got a standing ovation at Sundance Film festival. A quite discerning crowd no doubt too.

I know you will accuse me of being a troll and in this case you may be correct. I hate people that post to show up someone who makes an innocent spelling or grammar error. However, in this case it is for your own good :-) Facetious is one of my favorite words. You spelled it incorrectly. If you notice, facetious is the ONLY word to use the vowels (a,e,i,o and u in their natural order) and if you use the adverb(a dying art)facetiously, you even use the Y!!

I apologize in advance for my trollike post, but now, with this bit of trivia you will be the hit at your next party!!

reply

Thank you for the correction, you're not a troll.
I will remember this lesson. I remember as a child being taught how to spell "together" I was taught to remember "to get her". I've always remembered that and now, thanks to you, I'll remember how to spell Facetious.

Your wife is definitely slumming it married to you.

reply

Fascinating. Does your mom know you're on her computer?

reply

Your opinion is entirely invalidated for the use of "faceteous". Twice. Even if you had spelt it correctly at no point does the film make fun of serious issues. It tells its story with humour but the underlying sadness and struggle for all the characters are explored and developed clearly. Maybe you missed the happy sad speech which, to me, was the whole point.

Don't worry if you didn't get this film, another identikit Marvel superhero release will be out soon.
