Another silly "retro" show to avoid casting people of color?

Seriously, this sh!t has to stop. Pan Am was cancelled and Mad Men is done.

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

It's a great show and you just need to get over the history of this country. Should we make women powerful in politics and make some of the astronauts black so it can be PC? It was the time of history....plain and simple. Was it right or fair or however you want to put it? No. But it was part of history and I, for one, enjoy is seeing it played out on my tv. If it offends you that much, pick up your remote and push a button! So sick of all the whiners!

reply

There were not a lot of people of color in the early space program.

The OP obviously missed the scene by the motel pool, where the black lady was picking up towels off the lounge chairs.

Here we go....look they showed "colored" (your word) people in the show...at the time....there were COLORED tables, and water fountains and bathrooms...its called history. (does not make it right...but fact.....just like Confederate Flag....slavery and the South were where the SLAVES were...fact...but when you do stories from history...and they are done factually they have images that are not going on NOW...get over it. USE YOUR BRAIN (an assumption) AND LOGIC.

They have included as much diversity as they can without making the show extremely inaccurate. Obviously, there were no black astronauts until much later, but there were almost no non-white professionals working for NASA then, especially in the still-segregated states of Florida and Texas. Just look at the old PR photos of the NASA flight control rooms of that period: seas of white faces.

reply

Seas of white MALE faces. Amelia Earhart aside, Trudy Cooper's being a licensed pilot was a rarity!

I think the OP's point was that the chose an historical setting that didn't include minorities because it didn't have minorities.

I think they chose the historical setting because it's interesting, dramatic and approaching the edge where it fades out of living memory.

reply

If so, that's a silly point. The series is an adaptation of a book about the lives of the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo astronaut wives. You can't be true to the book and show racial and gender diversity at NASA in the mid-60's, because it didn't exist.

And we get that. We're just saying that that is race-baiting idiocy.

And we get that.

Some of us do. Some still don't, as evidenced by the post directly above yours.

I agree - the OP's point really isn't well taken. Every choice of a subject or period that isn't racially integrated is not motivated by racism. In this case, I think it's motivated by an interesting story and period.

It's 2015!! And its sooooo ridiculous that black, asian, latin people still feel like they arent getting what "they are owed" even on TV. I mean, would it just be satisfactory if every show had the leading character Black?? Lets just not have white actors. Jesus, we finally have a Black President, running the free world, and I feel like race has been such an issue since he was being mentioned as a candidate. Race has always been a bit of an issue, but since 80s-mid 2000 it wasnt like it is now. Every other news article is about racism and black this and black that. Its like we are back in the 60s. Seriously, get over it.

Don't ever turn on your computer again. Or at least try to comment in message forums sparingly. Because that sh!t you wrote was just stupid.

When theres no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

reply

Maybe you should put away your computer and read some news stories about the real world, not just TV shows. The opinion of the person who you so rudely "scolded" is the opinion of many people. The race card and race baiting is really getting old. Race should not be a factor in every single subject discussed.
It ain't right, it ain't wrong. It just is.

reply

So don't watch it, it's as easy as that. There are people that do enjoy this show along with the other two you mentioned.

reply

So, we should rewrite history? Not show it? There is a channel specifically for blacks. What's on it? Tyler Perry comedies. (and as you deride the white shows, I could have put quotes around 'comedies'. But they aren't written for me, and fall flat. But I'm not the audience). There are a bunch of hispanic channels. Both groups have money. Why aren't THEY doing these shows?
I thought for the time period, blacks were well-represented.

I think the series accurately 're-enacted history for heaven's sakes! If there were no black astronauts for 20 + years of the Space program, why would they cast black people in those roles? If anything, it demonstrates how 'white' life was during that period in time and how both astronauts of color and women were finally allowed into the Space program.
