I(don't) hate to burst your bubble, but Walt Disney Pictures has been casting celebrities since 1949 with The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad and Bing Crosby and Basil Rathbone. So a VERY LONG TIME, and it worked so well, that everyone started doing it for their animated features. It was only when Aladdin came out in 1992 that Disney started making the celebrity a big part of the advertising campaign. Moana by contrast, seems to be ignoring the fact they have Dwayne The Rock Johnson for the most part in it's marketing. I don't see where you are getting the idea that they are selling the film solely based on celebrities. Especially since the titular character is an unknown. As for him being a "quasi-celebrity, People magazine named him sexiest man alive this year. I don't think they give that to minor celebrities. As to the quality of the films, the casting of a celebrity does not hurt them. I love Wallace and Gromit, and Peter Sallis does the voice of Wallace. That doesn't hurt the quality of the finished product for Wallace and Gromit.
So to sum it up. Get some new ideas already. Your trite complaint about animated features is LONG played out.
