Interesting battle between four films for animated Oscar this year

Moana, Zootopia, Finding Dory and Kubo and the Two Strings. All have got outstanding reviews and they will definitely fill four of the five noms for both Golden Globes and Oscar. Sausage Party as an adult film will probably fill the remaining slot to add some balance.

reply

It definitely is. So far, my ranking would be Moana, Zootopia, and then Finding Dory, all very close. I have yet to see KatTS, so I can't judge where that one would be.

reply

Mine would be

Zootopia
Kubo
Moana

If we include The Little Prince , then I'd place it before 3rd, I think. Too bad it never got a wide release. It was lovely.

reply

I'd place little prince above Moana*

reply

Actually, I think 'The Red Turtle' will get a nomination instead of 'Sausage Party'.

reply

Sausage Party shouldn't be anywhere NEAR a nomination.

reply

I haven't seen Sausage Party but was just thinking that it might have a chance because it was aimed at adults and they would go for diversity. But based on reviews it's not great while Red Turtle which I hadn't heard of until post above is on 92 on Metacritic.

reply

Anything's possible, Minions was nominated for best animated feature at the Oscars lol

reply

'Minions'? I'm pretty sure that wasn't nominated for an Oscar...

reply

You're right. My mistake.. sorry

reply

It was nominated at the BAFTAs.

Dormammu, I've come to bargain.

reply

Thanks for pointing that one out, I hadn't heard of it but have known them to choose relatively obscure foreign films for nominations plus it has 92 on Metacritic.

reply

Plus, Ghibli was involved with that film, so if any foreign film gets nominated, it's THAT one.

reply

I haven't seen Red Turtle but I hear it's great !

reply

No love for Kung Fu Panda 3? The only movie I saw 3 times in theaters this year. (Saw both Zootopia and Finding Dory twice).

reply

Any other year, KFP 3 would be competitive, but there's so many highly acclaimed animated movies this year that its pretty great reviews aren't enough.

reply

I brought up KFP3 before and the response I got from others was that it wasn't high enough in metacritic scores and possibly something about a sequel? Not sure, but I'll give you love for it. I loved it and far more than Dory. If it were up to me, the list would be Kubo, KFP3, and Zootopia. I haven't seen Moana yet or Red Turtle.

reply

It probably won't since it went straight to Netflix in the U.S.

reply

It actually did receive a US release, although very minimal (only expanded up to around 150 theaters and made around 1 million),

reply

Good point, but you also have to consider 'Beasts of No Nation', which did not qualify as an Oscar contender simply because it was a Netflix film...

reply

I'm pretty sure it did qualify, just wasn't nominated.

reply

Kubo won't win. It's going to be either Zootopia, Moana, and Finding Dory.

reply

I don't think Sausage Party will get a nom either and I have a feeling that it's a neck and neck race between Zootopia and Kubo, as both were the most unique storytelling-wise while also being visually stellar. I feel like Moana, a great movie in its own right by the way, has a better chance with the best original song category and will at least be nominated for music.

Trying to create a funny, engaging YouTube channel. If you guys check it out, hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

Laika will be robbed again like they are every year when they make a movie.

Finding Dory will probably get it, cause Pixar.

reply

Finding Dory will probably not get it, cause sequel. The three Disney/Pixar films could conceivably split the vote, allowing Kubo or The Red Turtle to sneak through, but I have a feeling the unexpectedly strong performance and unintentional but real anti-Trump message of Zootopia will win the day.

Kubo and Moana were both amazing. Zootopia was good. Finding Dory was meh.

It'll be Moana or Kubo.

reply

What pry tell makes you believe that both of those films are the opinions but Zootopia isn't? Practically every Oscar tracking site I've found all have Zootopia as the winner. Might I add it's already picked up a BAFTA and a Hollywood Film Award (that might not sound like a big deal to you but Zootopia is the first Disney film without a Pixar label to win this award!) And a lot of Academy voters attend that ceremony also.
