Have to agree that the songs were not memorable. Best Disney musical in two decades? Frozen and Tangled had better, more memorable songs.
shareTangled was more polarizing than Moana, when it came to having a "memorable" soundtrack. As for Frozen, the music chart positions and the internationally multi-platinum sales speak for themselves. Though, the songs of Frozen may not be as artistically developed as say, The Princess and the Frog, which boasts two Oscar nominations, despite being penned and tuned by Randy Newman (cue the echoes of groaning.) But certainly Frozen's music is better than Mandy Moore droning her way through Menken's b-side work. And Moana is obviously leagues ahead of Tangled and Frozen, when it comes to artistry.

I'm gonna be manicured, You wanna be man cured
Seriously? I'm still humming "How Far I'll Go". The music was fabulous!
shareHow Far I'll Go
We Know The Way
You're Welcome (both versions)
I Am Moana
All great songs. I'll take any of them over any of the overrated songs in frozen.
I thought the songs were one of the strongest points of the films, they were well timed in terms of plot too. I'm not usually one to even bother too much about film music either.
shareI have to agree with most people here. The music was excellent, easily the best soundtrack from a Disney movie in years. In fact, I can't think of one I like better. And it gets mega points for pushing Frozen off the stage.
shareLike most other posters here, I disagree. My daughter and I left the theater discussing which song we liked best. "You're Welcome" is pretty darn catchy. But "we Know The Way" and "How Far I'll Go" are inspirational. My 4 year old is trying to learn the words to "Shiny" with limited success.
The only stand-out song in Frozen is "Let It Go", and that is because of the simple chorus that 2 year olds can sing, and the amazing vocal talents of Idena Menzel. The others got old quickly.
I agree, I enjoyed "We know the Way" but only for it's harmonic chorus.
Nothing truly special here in my opinion.
Also some of the numbers felt a bit forced to me, especially at the beginning.
I had much higher hopes after the irresistably charming Frozen soundtrack.
Totally agree. Everyone is raving over this because it's from That HAMILTON Guy, but it's like he tossed it all off in a single weekend: the songs have no structure and barely any decent rhyming. He's done far better than this.
And to say this is the best Disney score in two decades is just a lot of fanboy hooey. TANGLED and FROZEN both had seriously well-made scores. This one was... okay.
Are you talking about the actual score or the songs? There has been some confusion because Disney released the entire score on an album with the word "soundtrack" in the title. Often, movies have two albums - one score, one soundtrack. Anyway, I ask only because Mark Mancina wrote the score, so Lin-Manuel Miranda criticism isn't appropriate when saying the score is mediocre because he didn't compose it. And, of course, he didn't have anything to do with the all-Tokelauan songs.
In my opinion "Innocent Warrior" and "Tulou Tagaloa" are actually the two best songs in the film. Not just because they are beautiful melodies, but because they have the most meaning (imo). The first being a prayer to Tagaloa for creating beauty and requesting permission to journey safely. The second is a song is basically the ocean commenting on her innocence and telling her that the feeling of freedom in the water will help her in the future. I feel that's deeper than any song in Frozen or Tangled. It's both great that it's in a Polynesian language, and bad that it's in a Polynesian language. Great for authenticity, but poor for appreciation because unless you look up the translations, it's just a really pretty melody.
On a personal note, I'm getting very tired of Miranda getting so much credit, so I feel your irritation. And this is from someone who saw Hamilton live which convinced me that he's a borderline genius. I do agree that there is a large amount of fawning over certain songs because he wrote them or co-wrote them. But, on the other hand, I feel some of the songs are still pretty nice. "We Know the Way" is my personal favorite, but it might have a lot to do with the fact that where canoeing is still a huge thing in Polynesia and the Bishop Museum planetarium has presentations on wayfinding where you learn the basics!

Agreed.
Not very memorable, and not that good.
