Why is this "PG"

Seriously? What do I need "parental guidance" for in this movie?
Maui, a secondary character, runs around in a loin cloth? Big deal, G-rated Tarzan had a far more sexy man MAIN character running around in a loin cloth the entire movie. G-rated Hercules had Meg, who was basically walking sex.
Things get a LITTLE tense with the crab and lava goddess? How about the tense scenes in G-rated Tarzan, Hercules, The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and even the Frog Princess had far more tense scenes.
This movie really should have been rated G, but I guess because it isn't completely tame that means it isn't appropriate for General audiences and requires the Parental Guidance.

A lot of animated movies in America are rated PG these days. Even live action family and kids movies. A G-rating rarely gets issue now for marketing purposes.

Well, this is all quite subjective. You can show the G rated Pinocchio to some kids and they'll be terrified. Same with Snow White. Some kids are simply scared of stuff (monsters, witches, man-eating whales, etc).

Plus you can click on the IMDb parents guide, right on the main page for Moana. I haven't seen the film yet, but they explain it there:

Frightening/Intense Scenes
The film contains some scenes of peril, such as the one in the beginning of the film where Moana and Maui battle an entire army of creatures while at sea. They are seen attacked by the creatures who descend upon their boat with blow darts.

There is also a scene of a crab-like creature attempting to capture and eat Moana and Maui, where the two are seen stuck briefly inside the creature's mouth.

In addition, there is also a fairly prolonged and intense sequence featuring a fiery creature called the lava monster battling Moana and Maui. In the sequence, Maui is seen transforming into several different creatures and severing off the creature's arm with a giant hook.

While the scenes of perils are resolved positively, with little details of injury shown, they are fairly intense.

In addition, the appearance of the lava monster and sinister crab-like creature may also be unsettling for younger children.
