So, is this the new wave of TV?

Characters nobody in their right mind can root for? I felt not a single ounce of sympathy or HOPE, towards any of the characters on this show. After watching the entire series, I was absolutely disgusted by every single one except perhaps Romeo and he was basically bat *beep* crazy. I realize the world isn't perfect and certainly the people aren't either, but in a tv show, please give me at least one redeeming character to root for. I don't ask that everyone poop rainbows and sunshine, but in all honesty, I don't think the majority of the human race is a descendant of the devil, and I like to be reminded of that in the entertainment I watch.

I'll agree for this series especially. Now I don't think this is "how television is now" , but this show went nowhere and had no big payoff. We knew Claire was a great dancer who hated herself and was in love with her brother, therefore always down and crying. As for the rest of the characters they were as dull and boring as Claire. The main gay guy who ran things tried to be the guy from Black Swan , and wasn't terrible, but wasn't great. I watched it through because I invested my time through 3 episodes and it was streaming, but it had nothing to offer but a nice dance scene in the end (what a surprise lol).
This show never would have made it without streaming it like they wisely did. I know 100% I wouldn't watch this weekly, and I know many on here are with me.

If you stream an entire season of a premium cable show, you don't have to be concerned with ratings or a decline in viewership mid-season.

I suppose if the subject matter is dark and depressing, this model makes sense. Traditionally, say with network TV, you have to have hooks to bring viewers back. This usually results in cookie cutter programs and those that have a villain-of-the-week procedural. In some way streaming provides flexibility for more shows, not necessarily shows that are going to be well loved.

Frankly, I'd much rather see a steady rollout of episodes ala AMC. You're never too far away from a new episode of The Walking Dead since they split seasons. By contrast, you can binge a season of Orange is the New Black the first week it hits, then completely forget everything that happened by the time you get to see another episode in about 1 year.

I don't mind it if it's a limited series. This seems like a character exploration of the madness of creative genius. What one segment of society thinks is screwed up may be totally normal for another segment.

But I agree with you when it comes to a long running series. I've gotta have someone to root for if I'm going to care enough about characters to continue watching a series. Maybe the really dark nature of this show was why they turned it into a limited run series rather than a series with multiple seasons thatthey had
originally planned.

Let me blow your mind: storytelling doesn't require a protagonist, nor does it require likable characters. It never did. More so, art in general, and that includes entertainment arts, doesn't have to make you feel better. Imagine that.

Finally, somebody with a brain... I found this show to be entirely unrealistic. With possibly realistic characters (you know the NYC types) up to their disgusting, despicable sodom and gomorrah-like behavior.. complete crap, in every sense of the word.

just more trash TV, dumbed down, desensitizing, CRAP for the masses. If this is what Americans are up to today, then here's my passport, I'm out.

I don't think the brain does what you think it does if you connect the OP's post with it.

despicable sodom and gomorrah-like behavior

 wow. Just wow.

If this is a artistic reflection how certain areas of life have developed, wouldn't it be right to depict it in this way?

How should we know that nonsense is happening and how can we fix it, if we don't know it happens?

It makes no sense to make a show about good strong characters, that are not "disgusting" when the reality isn't like that.

Sentimental pessimism isn't helping at all.

Agreed things have become to nihilistic they try and make things to realistic to where they come boring and uninteresting its why i stopped watching indie movies because they follow the fame pattern characters who are uninteresting and who you could give a fuq about and just want to die either by homicide or suicide

It seems real to me. Aren't ballet companies cutthroat like ABC. I guess all the dancers are well adjusted individuals dancing on broken and deformed toes.
