So she could claim self defense.. That's why she was bruising herself up when it happened

The son coming in and taking the charge was not planned, or expected. At first he thought he was covering for his mother's weak self defense play, but then he realized the significance of the watch, and that Keanu's character actually did it

Why would he have his watch off when he was planning to murder her husband? A double header?

The story's as slow as the visuals. The pulp fiction dark tones suggest Loretta's going to be guilty of something.

I don't think he would have the watch off, i think it fell off when he stabbed Boone. He didn't notice it but the kid did when he was placing his fingerprints on the knife. It could also be said that possibly the kid had a theory that his mother killed his father or that she was involved with the murder hence his desire to protect her. Also they mention a few times that Mike was a wunderkind when it comes to forensics and law....so maybe he put it all together.

I thought about this. But if the kid put his own prints on the knife to protect his mother, wouldn't he have knowingly protected Keanu? Why would he do that? He clearly had no love for the guy, and wanted the DA to bring him to justice.

The kid knew Keanu did it, but decided to protect his "mother"? He wouldn't have to, because his mother didn't do it, and he knew.

That seems inconsistent to me.

That would seem a singularly weak defence, for a lawyer-planned perfect murder. One would expect a lawyer to come up with a much better scenario, an accident of some sort.

Which was probably the reason for the scene at the end, showing us that Boone had found out Loretta was cheating on him and was threatening her (and maybe Ramsay, as it could be implied Boone knew it was him). So they had to act quickly.

You are right if you think he wanted to protect her mostly, but I think by making her hold the knife he was protecting himself not her! also he had very few moments to think of something!

This would have had to have been a perfectly timed blitz attack upon a larger, heavier, possibly formidable victim, whose torso was completely vulnerable to a single, forceful lunge for the heart, which is not entirely implausible. But I'm bothered about that watch supposedly coming off unnoticed in such an attack. And then there were the forensics mentioned earlier in the trial and also somewhat emphasized in the story.
