OT: Anyone else like the Force Awakens?

Can't really discuss this on the TFA board without getting hate.

I thought it was just as good as Revenge of the Sith 8/10. It's no where near the original three but I still liked it I just thought it was a bit overrated but be no means was it trash.

What do you guys think?

reply

Loved the film!

reply

I did. I thought it was a blast and right up there with the originals. The only downside was Kylo Ren, and thank goodness he wasn't the only villain.

I liked it. It was a less interesting version of A New Hope (especially in terms of narrative structure and spirituality), but fine enough as a Star Wars movie. I certainly hope they branch out a bit more for the sequels.

There's a huge difference between bringing back the magic of the OT and shamelessly bringing everything back from it to appease hive-minded nerds who will buy anything with Star Wars slapped on it.

TFA didn't 'recreate the magic' at all.

...and that's why we have opinions.

Why do people like you automatically assume that everybody who liked it must be a fanboy? I love Broccoli. Am I a Broccoli fanboy who was brainwashed by the vegan lobby now? Utter horsesh!t.

And it begins. It seems like we can't avoid that kind of idiotic argument this far away from the Episode VII boards. I'd just the ignore that guy if I were you.

Loved it. Better, by miles, than the prequels imo. A pretty good film, but a great Star Wars film. I've watched it a few times, and have still enjoyed it. The action was good, the new characters were great, and the old character fitted in nicely.
Didn't like the new Death Star, at all, but I think that they played it relatively safe, to make sure that people could see that it was the Star Wars they liked, and will hopefully really branch out for the sequel

reply

I liked it a lot.

I think it's better than the prequels, but not on the same level as the OT. They have some talented young(ish) actors to take over the franchise, and they're trying to capture the spirit of the OT.

No reason to hate it, imo.

No. I don't hate it. I just didn't think it was good at all. And I wanted it to be good. Instead, the story was just blah and reminded me too much of ANH. I really did dislike Kylo Ren. He came across as this spoiled child with great power, and when I looked at him, I just shook my head in disgust and said to myself, 'this can not be the next Vader'. And the Snook? guy was just plain goofy looking, made me think of the wizard of Oz. I kept wondering if there was a man behind the curtain fiddling with controls.

That's pretty much exactly what I thought when I saw Hayden Christensen playing what was not going to be the next Vader, but what was going to be the actual Vader.

Kylo Ren didn't just come across as that - he was meant to be an impetuous child of a character. He's a character with some serious parental issues.

For me personally, this new guy just didn't click. I'd actually rather be watching Hayden Christenson, and that says a lot. Kylo Ren just seemed to me so two dimensional in his acting.

Whenever I look at the prequels (not often), it's to watch Ewan MacGregor scenes. I did like watching his character progress throughout the movies from a Padewan to a Jedi Master.

But that's just my opinion.

reply

Fair enough.

Watching Hayden Christensen as Vader gives me hives, but to each their own.

But you're right - McGregor is one of very few saving graces of the PT.

I though it was SOO bad it made even TPM look good. Far and away the worst Star Wars film. With JJ directing I was expecting it to be bad but not THAT bad.
