OT: Anyone else like the Force Awakens?

Can't really discuss this on the TFA board without getting hate.

I thought it was just as good as Revenge of the Sith 8/10. It's no where near the original three but I still liked it I just thought it was a bit overrated but be no means was it trash.

What do you guys think?

reply

It was OK. There's just something lacking in it. Almost like the film is just superficial. Even the death of Han didn't hold any gravitas.

When initially announced, I had no desire to see the spin offs, but this years looks like it will be much more substantive.

Smart move. Getting away from a board that you just can't take seriuosly anymore.

I loved TFA. Yes, it has obvious similarities to ANH. Yes, Rey is too good at everything she does. But does it bother me? Not one bit. Because the movie finally managed to recreate the magic and fun of the OT, something that the prequels never could. I did like Ep. III just fine, but it also was an overblown, overchoreographed green-screen mess. They definitely went into the right direction with TFA. Relying mostly on puppets and practical effects instead of ludicrous CGI (*cough*Snoke*cough*).

I didn't like the Godfather, so what?

reply

It was literally a modern version of ANH. Nothing fresh or original except they revealed Snoke to be the real mastermind too soon. Either way I have no hope for the next 2 movies whatsoever.

reply

A New Hope was just The Hidden Fortress in space. Nothing fresh or original except for the special effects. I could say the same about the next two films in the original trilogy very easily.

I really enjoyed TFA, however, while Star Wars copied Hidden Fortress, Hidden Fortress was not part of the Star Wars universe. TFA copied ANH, which was part of the same universe. As I said, I loved TFA, and it felt like a proper Star Wars film to me, but I hope, and expect , the next film to break away from the OT

reply

Irrelevant. Completely and utterly. It doesn't matter if Hidden Fortress isn't a part of the Star Wards franchise. Lucas still copied it.

reply

Of course it relevant . How many of the Star Wars audience had watched Hidden Fortress? How many of TFA audience , had not only watched ANH, but had watched it numerous times, and could probably quote the dialogue. I can't even begin to say how it is relevant

reply

And? I still fail to see how this matters. Lucas copied another movie just as much if not more than The Force Awakens copied him. End of story.

reply

If you don't see how it matters, then that is your problem. I explained it clearly. End of story

reply

Not really. No, you didn't, and it doesn't matter. There is no difference between what George Lucas did and waht J.J. Abrams did. Lucas made an homage to The Hidden Fortress and Flash Gordon. Abrams made an homage to the original Star Wars trilogy all in one movie.

Creativity is just one long line of theft when it comes down to it. So there is no purpose is getting your panties in a twist over something being similar to something else.

Lucas played homage to a Japanese film which very few people in the western world star wars audience would have seen, and JJ paid homage to a film, from the same franchise. Not just any old film, but one of the most popular films of all time. Yeah, exactly the same. You have definitely won this argument . I can't believe how stupid I've been. You are right. End of story. I bow to your superior debating skills

reply

I'm still not seeing the difference nor why it matters here. Even if there is one, what better movie to pay homage to than the one that started it all?

There's still hate on that board? Lol! it's almost December again.

reply

It's definitely better than the prequels which are utter garbage. It's not as good as ANH or TESB, but about on par with but ultimately slightly less than ROTJ.

It was nice. I liked seeing the old characters interact with the new characters (and each other of course), the visuals were stunning and it felt like pure Star Wars action.

However it was simply just a very safe film, presumably made to be a crowd-pleaser after the prequels. That sets it back a lot, since it doesn't really do anything that original.

I enjoyed it but didn't think it was the greatest ever. I saw all of the first 6 films when they first came out, so it was fun to be able to take my son to see a new Star Wars movie at the theater, and not just on DVD.

I also didn't hate the prequels. IMO, other than Jar Jar, too many people were looking for those movies to be life-changers the way the first one was. They didn't understand that the whole scope of cinema had changed drastically between the time ANH and TPM came out. Back then, you had to stand in line to see ANH and if you didn't see it at the theaters, you weren't going to see it again for years and then it would be an edited version shown on network TV. Luckily, it was at the theater for a year.

It was also a cultural phenomenon inasmuch as people who weren't sci-fi fans were able to enjoy the movie. My parents said it reminded them of the movies they saw on Saturday afternoons when they were kids.

By the time TPM came around, you didn't have to wait years to see it. In just a matter of months you could own the movie.

It's why I try not to get too hyped about a movie. I don't want to be pumped up expecting it to be an 11/10, and then be "disappointed" when it is "only" an 8/10.

Loved it the first time and now I think it's terrible
