Why did it flop so badly?

I loved this movie! I had the pleasure of seeing it in IMAX 3D when it came out and I thought that it was incredible and by far the best use of 3D I have seen so far.

The 3D stuff on the wire was amazing but I thought the movie around it was actually quite good as well so out of curiosity, I watched it again on DVD on my tiny TV screen in 2D. I thought the movie held up well even without the huge screen and 3D. The visuals were still good, it's undeniably a great story and it had a good sense of fun. I liked Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance very much.

I thought it deserved to do much better than it did ($60 million worldwide on a $35 million budget - ouch!). It's Rotten Tomatoes scores are pretty decent (Critics 85%, audience 78%) so why didn't people go to see it?

I watched the documentary before seeing this film on streaming and I have to say it is very different in a good way - surprisingly entertaining and enlightening. Perhaps audiences were expecting it to be a dry bio pick but it's more like a heist movie in set up and the walk itself is a masterclass in tension. I would watch again on the big screen given a chance.

I thought it was very mediocre. As a documentary it worked but as a feature film, they didn't have enough interesting material about Petit's life, to make it a a 2 hour feature film. It felt long. JGL is a good actor but his phony French accent is also noticeably bad.

I was thinking the same thing about how it felt like a heist film whilst watching. And yeah the walk, just want to scream at him to finish up. I really liked it.
