"Black Widow Movie Will Deviate from the Comics"

...and if you complain, you're a troll according to Esquire.

"Complaining seems to be routine part of life for the faction of comic book superfans who are very vocal on the internet. Places like Twitter and Reddit are set on fire any time the MCU announces something that seems to "dishonor" the comics. For a certain type of Marvel fan, foregoing the sacred texts is considered a mortal sin; a fate worse than death. But according to an interview on Inverse, the writer of the upcoming Black Widow film doesn't give a shit about that. And for good reason—have you ever seen some of the portrayals of women in these decades-old books? Whew. Not great.

Jac Schaeffer said she "can't not be involved" in the new wave of female-centered stories that Marvel has in store for its Phase 4. The writer, whose weird sci-fi rom-com, TiMER, happened to hit theaters the same weekend as Iron Man 2 in 2010, is rejecting the problematic, sometimes outright oppressive texts from Marvel history that fanboys take so much stock in today. She said "I'm not interested in adhering to comic canon that is discriminatory in any way or that violates my values system." Hell. Yeah. And regarding the trolls who flock to Rotten Tomatoes to "review bomb" films that they see as too alienating for white men, or rather, too empowering for women and marginalized voices, she told Inverse, “When people react with hate, it saddens me. I think it’s a shame. But that’s not where I want to put my energy. I’m not interested in the loud, sour-grapes voices.”

Comic books are historically guilty of problematic depictions of women. And some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have been guilty of the same treatment. Black Widow's first appearance in Iron Man 2, after all, has Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark literally saying "I want one."

Natasha Romanoff, like many female characters in comics, is in dire need of an update. But it looks like Jac Shaeffer is set to change all that. She told Inverse, “I wasn’t a huge superhero movie fan before starting to work [at Marvel], but now that I’m doing it, there’s just so much opportunity to make big, positive statements."

Hopefully the Black Widow movie, which is set to come out on May 1, 2020, will set a new precedent for how women are treated in these narratives."

I am all for proper representation of women and minorities and what not in movies.

But that last line is extremely worrisome

[“I wasn’t a huge superhero movie fan before starting to work [at Marvel], but now that I’m doing it, there’s just so much opportunity to make big, positive statements."]

If the main point of this movie is going to be about making "big, positive statements" instead of putting out an entertaining story for the audiences, then they are going to throw up a damp squib of a movie. If this is indeed going to be the purpose of Black Widow movie, we might finally see a Marvel movie BOMB.

Agreed with this.
Kevin Faige needs to be more careful with this woke era and not fall into the trap completely.

Yes it’s great to give better roles to the marvel women and great to have diversity in characters, the idea of Shang Chi sounds really interesting.

The black widow trailer does look pretty good but that writer has an agenda which makes her look angry against men and that’s not good

Personally as a girl I do enjoy watching strong women on screen and I thought WonderWoman was really good, I thought Scarlet Witch had some great moments in Infinity War and the final battle in Endgame but I like swooning over strong alpha males too and we need those in the MCU as well.

I like women being strong but I also love the idea Of Tony Stark saving Pepper Pits from the Drones in Iron Man two and Thor flying with Jane to Asgard.
I love rooting for strong girls but I also want to see sexy Strong alpha men like Tony saving his girl once in a while

So... woke Marvel doing woke things. Sadly, that's no news anymore.

reply

Seeing as everything Marvel touches turns into a billion dollars, they're not going to stop any time soon.

reply

Disney and Marvel movies didn't use to be woke. The franchise grew and got a huge momentum, and THEN went full woke. That's a common pattern, first get the public involved, then go woke. In Marvel, Black Panther can be considered woke, but the wokefest didn't start until Captain Marvel. So it's gonna take 2-3 years to see how that works for them. Franchises with less momentum went down and even broke after going woke.

Mark my words: the coming years are gonna be hard for Disney.

And here I was expecting your post to say something like "Natasha isn't given the Super Soldier Serum that was given to her in the comics".

reply

Black Widow's first appearance in Iron Man 2, after all, has Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark literally saying "I want one."

Stark was echoing the thoughts of every guy at that moment. A few women, too.

who cares what the website says films are for people no these bums, according to them my ass.

reply

I don’t get why nerds get so angry when comic book movies deviate from the comics. Nobody reads comic books anymore, and comic books regardless are the singlemost poorly written and convoluted medium of art that exists. I say take the characters and overall story but do your own thing with it.

reply

And these movies are what you call Art? Yeah a lot of comics these days aren't that amazing but there are some that exist like the Recent Daredevil Run,but there are decades are great stories from Marvel and DC. To answer your initial question 1.because there is good material from the books and 2. Most of these MCU Movies don't make a movie better than the material or at least respect the material (Winter Solider is the exception)

reply

I certainly dont think these MCU films are art, but the fact that half of them are in the IMDb Top 250 indicates the majority of people do.

reply

I don't use Imdb or rt to determine quailty. Winter Soldier isn't on the top 250 and its the best mcu movie period

reply

When people stated their opinion with "period" then what else left to discuss?

reply

Everything

reply

Half of them? There's only 3
