Sorry everyone, this is not gonna picked up as a series

I enjoyed the movie as many of you did but it won't be made into a series, at least not without a major re-casting. Constance Wu (Polly) is now on the hit sitcom Fresh Off the Boat.

They kind of solved that problem at the very end, didn't they, with multiple Pollys, none of whom were the same actress.

It seems to me any casting issue here could be solved easily with a cameo appearance by Wu in a later episode where she gets stuck in a single timeline. Really, the same gambit could be applied to any cast member by having a similar looking actor replace them.

reply

?Pretty sure all three Polly's were Wu.

reply

Yes, all three were clearly played by the same actress. Just with different hair styles and slightly different clothes.

Wow... somebody had to go there didn't they? I thought they were different girls, and if that was the effect they were going for, I would say they achieved it

Merovingian Goddess
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!

I'm pretty sure he was joking

It's not unusual that roles are recast if a series gets picked up. Game of Thrones recast people all the time, The Mountain has been played by 3 actors now.

reply

Yes, right. The EASIEST thing to do with a show is to recast the players.
They could cast all well-knows, no well-knowns, or a mixture. No one is invested in these exact actors to the point of saying, well, we can't get Jessica Rothe (Mark Hapka, Eric Jungmann, Constance Wu, etc.), so, no series. This includes most everyone else involved with this pilot. If the suits think it's strong enough, it will be green-lighted. Unfortunately, it is up to the suits. That is always the fly in the ointment. They need Josh Whedon or some other producer/writer of his stature and it would be a lot easier to get it off the ground.

It worked quite well for MASH!

reply

And Buffy.

reply

It worked pretty good for Bewitched too.... And it works all the time with Soap Operas....

reply

Agreed. Both Gilligan's Island and Charmed recast from the pilot.

reply

Recasting happens when need be. I think if this move garners enough interest/demand we could get a series. This could be sliders as it should have been.

I am reminded how wildly successful Stargate SG-1 was when it started with a recasted core. Kurt Russel and James Spader were good, but ultimately Michael Shanks and Richard Dean Anderson were probably did a better job than the originals would have been able to pull off I think. It would have been a different show had it not happened.

Lesson here, and elsewhere is this.
When starting off a series, it isn't that bad to recast roles, even if they are the central characters. It has been done before lots of times. And often times it turns out to be rather successful.

reply

Actually the movie Stargate was a theater released movie for the sake of being a single story movie rather than a television series. James Spader and Kurt Russell were movie stars and it was not a television pilot episode or a straight to video (or Netflix) release as is so often done now with tv or internet series shows in mind. A few years later SG-1 the series was developed with its equally great cast, and neither can compare to the other.

I thought Kurt Russell was better in the original concept of his character, as Richard Dean Anderson never came off as someone who could ever have been the lifebroken, heartbroken, beaten down man that Kurt's character was (which is why his character accepted the suicide assignment as portrayed in the movie version). But, in the TV series, there came a subtle change in the cause of Richard's involvement, and, thus, no need for that suicidal aspect of the original character's past life events.

The great thing about SG-1 the series was that they stayed true to the core of the story and the personalities of the characters throughout its ten year lifespan. SG-1 survived a few cast changes over the years until it finally could not.

I hope they do make Parallels into a series - with the integrity and dedication provided such shows as SG-1.

Putting the cast aside for the moment, the question is will Fox pick up the concept as a series? I'm presuming this was a FOX venture. They could sell the rights to making a series to another organization like Netflix or SyFy. What it will always come down to are the numbers($$) and whether FOX or someone else thinks there's an audience which will support the show.

Sliders, which this seems to be more closely related to than SG-1, was able to survive for a few seasons. Although this is not a remake, which Hollywood and the TV studios love to do, the (and excuse the use of the word here) parallels between the two shows is significant.

Although they didn't create the machine/building, they are a small but related group (by family or friendship), with one exception, moving through what could be an infinite number of parallel worlds while trying to get home, And they must change worlds on a regular basis or risk being trapped in that one world.

There some obvious differences to sliders as well. The Constance Wu "Polly" character for one. It's also easy to explain why there are three of her. Obviously from different parallel worlds, there are enough of them that they have managed to find each other in the building and have a plan. Most likely to finally get to the core world, which must be where the building originates. Either that or she is an agent of the core world. The father and mother also have a story to tell. They seem to be hiding out from whoever theose killers were. I suspect they work for the core world, possibly like bounty hunters, to take out violators of some core world code.

Just speculating here, but we may never know if the series is not picked up.

reply

Netflix already purchased it. It would be a Netflix venture, unless someone else buys it again.

reply

There are plenty of ways they could go with this looking forward. As for Polly, with so many beautiful Asian actresses, replacement would be simple.

I also wish this was picked-up.

reply

So they can't recast a different asian actress to continue the role? As if that has never happened before, ever, in any other pilot/series?

reply

Well, good to know you don't know what you're talking about. Hopefully we'll see this picked up and continued asap.

reply

Recasting would be a quick fix. But on the other hand, FOtB kinda sucks. Wouldn't be surprised if it got cancelled.
