Racist much? Gorillas+Criminals+Jail+Musicality+Gangs

Looks cute and Taron Egerton has a magnificent singing voice, BUT the story line of a young gorilla whose dad is in a gang, commits robbery, ends up in jail, and whose gang members wear gold chains is a poor choice: were all other animal species unavailable? What next, a light-colored gorilla as President and unarmed gorillas being shot in the back by cops? Why are the cops rhinoceroses and not pigs?

I just got done watching the film not even an hour ago and that had never crossed my mind. I didn't think "Oh, those gorillas are representing black people!" I was like "Oh, those gorillas are gorillas." Yes, I have heard that African Americans are referred to as monkeys and such, that was not even a thought I had as I watched this film.

On top of that, Johnny, the main gorilla, is a positive and morally upstanding character. He does not want to follow in his father's footsteps, he pursues his dreams and works hard, and he encourages the people he is competing against. Even his father becomes somewhat good at the end! He reconciles with his son and supports Johnny, then returns himself to prison (before he leaves, he asks Johnny to keep visiting him).

Why focus on only the ugly instead of the good?

You are just too sensitive. Maybe you are having your period when writing this.
Looking forward to watch your own movie with your own character choices.

No you are a hateful insensitive sexist republican !! You may not get the irony !!!

or you're racist to assume that blacks would have father's in gangs, commit robbery, end up in jail and wear gold chains, as well as sing well

Where did you get the idea that the gorillas in this movie "represented" African Americans? Can gorillas now never be used in an animated film because it will be deemed racist? I don't get the connection. Sorry.

One commenter mentioned leading a sheltered life if they had never heard the term gorilla used for a person of color so I guess I am one of those "sheltered" people even though I have lived around people of EVERY COLOR my entire life. And until you brought it up I never once even thought of it in any way other than gorilla's being the tougher bad ass species. Racism is NEVER going to stop until people stop reading racism into EVERYTHING that comes out! I'm honkey to the hilt but let me tell you something ... my Spanish and African American friends are more plentiful than my white and even they didn't think anything of the gorilla until seeing your comments! We took our kids and everyone laughed and had a great time!

Pretty sure the black people were represented by the Elephants which happened to be African elephants, but I don't see that as being racially offensive, just that the African Elephants sounded like black people
