Is the racism intentional or just an oversight in this movie?

We've got gorillas committing crime as a gang, the gorilla who wants to sing has his father in jail.

Really? Didn't anyone who suggested this part of the movie think, "Maybe gorillas aren't such a great idea." Because I'm almost 100% sure there's going to be some triggering in regards to racism in regards to this.

Honestly, they should have made the gang another type of animal. But not raccoons.

Nope not one bit. I actually thought the Gorilla's accents were one of the highlights of the movie. I loved their accent in general. You're just making a big deal out of nothing.

reply

yeah London inner city accents a la Snatch style... "you wot mate!?!"

You're looking too deep into the movie. Just enjoy it for what it is. Sometimes take a break from reality and watch in the confines of the theater screen, not outside it.

Not everything has to be examined.

I agree with you. This is the first thing I thought when I saw them, because I live in the real world and have had many years to know what people say about various ethnicities. English blacks could have this type of accent, and I didn't know the gang's actors were white, so that knowledge doesn't apply to me, and wouldn't anyway because they're actors and could play any part.
People here who claim they've never heard of such a thing must have been living a very pristine life under a rock. I was surprised at the filmmakers' choice, but it was momentary.

Well, there's your problem. You're reading the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail aspires to be the lining on the bottom of the budgie cage, but, alas, will never see such lofty heights. Paper has a cr@p threshold, and the DM exceeds that before it has even finished printing.

The clue is in the way they call the gorilla, Johnny, an aspiring hip-hop singer. He wasn't. Not even close.
