What Do People See In This Show?

It's not funny. It's just weird and uncomfortable.

reply

The show is uncomfortable probably because it's about real people. It's one of the least escapist shows on television. It's very gloomy and depressing at times, but it has so much heart and unlike the OP, I laugh quite a bit at this show.

Louie Anderson will probably win best supporting Emmy again. His transformation into Christine Baskets is incredible.

reply

He is the best part of the show for me. Glad they are showing more and more of the character, instead of an in the background person.

reply

It grows on you. I often find myself smiling at something hours later... Sometimes visual, like tonight's ep with Chip throwing pies in his own face, sometimes a line or delivery of a line, sometimes a situation.

The only thing I'm not crazy about is Dale. I'm not buying the character for some reason.

reply

I think Dale's character is deliberately exaggerated (well, more so than any of the others) making him crass and unlikeable. But that's his role :-)

I'm crazy about both Christine and Martha!

reply

Yeah, maybe it's the exaggeration. Not sure why he has that accent, though, when no one else in the family does. I have a feeling they're going to make him more sympathetic. They've already gone a little in that direction...rescuing the daughter from scumbag biker dude for instance. He needed a little humbling, and his wife provided that.

reply

We will never find out why Dale has an accent or why Martha's arm is in a cast. (Read that) my take is that it's a satire on normal family funny shows by being sadly dysfunctional and outrageously funny.

reply

The cast thing is very Louis C.K., who is exec producer. Lots of unexplained things and non sequiturs on his show. I like to think that Martha was chasing her cat when it happened.

reply

Maybe to differentiate between the twins.

Also, to portray an irritating guy.

reply

Each character is quirky. Chips French wife calls Chip "Chips" and Christine calls him " Chippy" haha😊

I'm pretty unfunny, weird and uncomfortable.
I have a dark sense of humor and I find it hilarious.
When I tell my friends the premise they give me a "wtf" look.
It's the best show about a rodeo clown though.

reply

That was the point, and that's what makes it humorous.
