EXACTLY. When Claire comes out of the door onto the driveway he says in his apology "I wanted to apologize to you at the trial but MY LAWYER WOULDN'T LET ME." (The caps are mine for emphasis). It was clear to me from the scene that he caused the accident, he was remorseful for that, and he would have even testified to that effect but his defense attorney stopped him. Which makes perfect sense...if you are on trial, or even ticketed by police you NEVER apologize and you NEVER admit guilt or offer an excuse that can later be used against you in a trial. However I also watched this movie with the closed captioning on, as most movies to me either have too much musical score blaring or the actors seem to mumble.
