William H. Macy character *spoiler*

Can someone please explain what William Macy.s character was in this movie ?
He was only in that one scene where he got a beating, and it wasn't clear who he was, for what trial? related to the accident ? ...

Also, do we know what really happened to her son ? Was she driving the car and got in an accident.

reply

It seemed as if was the one who caused the accident that injured her (back pain, pins in legs, scars) and killed her son.

Since he mentioned a trial, my guess is that he was drunk at the time, or negligent in some other way.

It was as if Macy had just walked off the set of "Shameless", where he currently plays a washed-up drunk, and made his cameo in this movie.

reply

I think it was obvious that he caused the accident that killed the little boy

reply

Absolutely. And presumably wasn't found guilty or spent very little time in prison for killing a child and maiming an adult for life.

Why do American viewers need everything spelled out in giant letters to understand?
You don't need an accident report or death certificate to understand WHM's role in her son's death. He is (in some way) responsible for the car accident and death seeks forgiveness which she can not give him. Him saying he can't live with himself and begging her to forgive him explains (without unnecessary technical details) that he is responsible for her son's death.
The brief PTSD flashbacks she has of herself behind the wheel end with the
sound of tires screeching. That tells us it was a car accident.
Anymore details would be gratuitous.
On the bright, I'm pretty sure there's another installment of Dumb And Dumber coming soon.

Right, because it's only Americans who have this issue.

How do you even know the OP is American, anyway?

Your comment tells us a lot more about your prejudices than anything else.

reply

You're assuming the OP is American. You know what assuming does, right? Google it.

reply

I assume the poster thought the OP was American because it's an American movie. But I could be wrong.

In any case, I agree with the poster. Does it have to be spelled out? It's obvious that he was responsible for the accident. It was also obvious that the accident was a car accident and her son was killed

reply

While I agree I thought the fact that the child was killed in an accident was pretty apparent I think it was quite rude the way the poster had to add that he felt it was an American who posted it... I am American and quite understood the topic and all the other quieter nuisances throughout the film. I am sure there are others across the world who are not quite as quick on the uptake as was the original poster. So what... that's why he/she asked, and that's why someone was kind enough to answer them.

Everyone knocks Americans until they need help!

Only non Americans don't need things spelled out. Aren't you aware of this you foolish American pig? ( sarcasm )

reply

Geez. You can't truly be that dense.

reply

I am an American citizen but was not born in the states, and I have noticed that there's an odd jealousy against Anericans...both here and on YouTube. Please know that not all non-Americans feel that way. I love Europe, but I also love living in the states, and the people back home in England are just as dense about some things. People are people are people wherever you go.

That said...WHM was obviously in pain and needed forgiveness for something very huge that happened and also altered his life. It seems easy enough to assume he was involved in the accident, and as one poster pointed out, he didn't even "pay for it" - at least not legally.

Thank you all for the replies .. After watching the movie thoroughly, it was obviously clear who Macys character was ..
sorry for the bother ..

Tony, get a life man!

reply

No need to apologize. I'm glad you asked the question, and the replies you received matched my assumptions about his character. William H. Macy plays a very brief and but crucial role here.

reply

I assumed Macy was her father from the way she treated him.

reply

i kind of thought for a brief moment he as her dad too but then it wouldn't really make sense as aniston was playing mid 40s in the movie and macy only looks in his mid 50s.

reply

I'm British and I thought it was her dad who didn't speak to her or support her or something. After reading this it has become clearer to me that he was involved with the accident, I guess I'm just dumb haha.
