Why has this film tanked at the Box Office?

I work in a cinema in the UK where the film opened on New Years Day. We thought it would do well (the Critics are raving about how good it is) but most screenings are either completely empty or only have a couple of customers in them. In fact we are getting a few more customers in for 'Assassin's Creed' which opened the same day. This week we put it into our smallest screen and moved 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' back into a larger screen (from the small screen where A.M.C. is now playing). Even though it opened in November, 'Fantastic Beasts' is nearly always completely sold out.

Personally, I loved to see this movie by myself at home. The subject makes it a bit scary to see it in cinema, as I'm not that comfortable crying my eyes out in public. I guess most people aren't. I would love it if we could see movies like this in the comfort of our own homes (cocoons), around the time it's in cinema. I'd love to pay for that.

"Why has this film tanked at the Box Office?"

Because it doesn't have Transformers or The Fast and the Furious attached to the title....

Maybe because it's an awfully boring movie? It drags so much for nothing. A story about cancer isn't particularly exciting, if you are going for it, then find an interesting story. And wow Felicity Jones was laughing during the cemetery scene!

I think you may have rather missed the point. It's not a story about cancer. It's a story about dealing with loss and emotional hardship, whatever the cause.

The cancer is incidental - it's just a device.

I'm guessing it comes down to lack of advertising + the little advertising there is doesn't portray what the film really is. It's not a CGI fest, despite the trailer. Even the title is a little misleading and might put off people who are actually the target audience.

In short it was promoted really badly.

I watched it having never heard of it(!) or seen the trailer and I LOVED it. It touched me deeply. If that was the experience that was advertised, I think you'd see sold out showings.

I guess through word of mouth it has potential to do really well on Bluray or streaming.
