People Asking for New Ending? Seriously?

It's a new adaptation of a famous work. If the ending is changed, it is not that work. Anyone who is a fan of the story goes to see how this cast and this director handles the material, just as fans of Shakespeare enjoy seeing various productions of Romeo and Juliet, or Hamlet. (No, I'm not really equating Christie to Shakespeare!) The apparent changes to the characters and action are borderline blasphemy as it is. To change the ending...? Why not just "borrow" elements from several existing mysteries and make a new, original, mystery and save having to pay rights to this work?

I have seen some silly comments on these boards, but the ones asking for a new ending really take the cake.

I think the ending is the powerful capper to a really good mystery. I wouldn't have it any other way, even if I did know the whole story going into it. So I agree with you.

What it needed was a more powerful take. It was so BORING! Pretty, but BORING! Imagine instead that they focus on what failing means to Poirot. He's world-renowned and he loves it. At the end of this movie, he has to make a decision: "Serve myself, or serve others?" If the depiction of how Daisy Armstrong's death destroyed dozens of lives had been more effectively portrayed, this movie could have been a GREAT retelling of Christie's story.

it could have been better, but it was OK. Not many remakes are good, so I didn't expect much.

I loved the book, loved the Lumet adaptation. I haven't seen this one yet, but I was hoping for a different take on the ending. Part of the problem with a mystery remake is that the investment of paying close attention in hopes of trying to figure out who did it is out the window. You already know in advance, so it doesn't bear any fruit to play audience detective. That takes away the fun of the movie for me.

Yet, you want to be faithful to the novel which has a genius ending. Which begs the question: Why remake this? To me it sounds like Branagh just wanted to play a great part. I hope they do 'something' to the ending to make it fresh.

CharlieS, I get what you're saying, but with classic mysteries like this I think the enjoyment (or lack of enjoyment) of watching them is to see how this particular group of actors play the characters. Of course we know how it will end, but that's the case anytime you re-watch any movie. When you watch a movie a second or third time you can look to appreciate other aspects besides "how it ends."

Regardless, it seems as if this particular rendition is generally a major disappointment according to the majority of reviews.
