Matt Boomer Ruined this Pilot. Interestings waaaay better!

He is supposed to be a seasoned veteran actor with acclaim and every time I see this guy he just falls flat...every time.

I'm not a hater and people love this guy but C'mon man! You need to bring more to a character than just being a great looking man and famously gay. There's a hint of charm and he is certainly likeable but wwwwwwwhere is the acting? Where is it? I mean Cary Grant was not a great actor but at least he owned the scene and had a command of the stage.

Now im watching the interesting stuff and in the first 10 minutes it's CLEARLY better.

Disagree, Bomer's completely fine in this role. Maybe looks a little too young for the role but his performance itself is fine.

He's SUPPOSED to be young - The real-life Irving Thalberg, on whom Monroe Stahr is based, became head of production at MGM when he was 21 years old and died in 1936 at the age of 37...

MATT is 38...(BTW, It's "Bomer," NOT "Boomer," funny-guy)...
Thalberg was born a "Blue Baby" (oxygen-deprivation to the heart)...He then had rheumatic fever as a young teen and was a semi-invalid who wasn't supposed to live till age 20...He lived in the books he read...The singer Bobby Darin had the same condition and also died at age 37...
Matt graduated from Carnegie-Mellon with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree...So his acting chops are well-earned...

He is a Golden Globe winner, Critics choice winner, Emmy nominee actor. His acting in The Last Tycoon is very stylized and different as is everyone else in the series. I can see some having issues with that style but to say he isn't acting is ridiculous. His every gesture, walk, talk was nuanced & studied. He is what you can call a rare method actor. If you have read the book by Fitzgerald, you can see how much he brought that character to life.

Why would you bring the gay angle? Are you sure you're not biased against him because he's as you call "famously gay"? I don't think that should figure in when one is judging an actor.

I like that you compare him to Cary Grant though:)

I thought The Interestings was funnily not very interesting. Well acted, but quite cliche imo.

I'm not a hater

Obviously you are. Either that or you think bashing him will get people to somehow change their opinion of him and vote for the pilot you're trying to solicit here. Most here already know him as the incredible talent that he is so that won't work.

I found The Interestings boring and unfocused, but I'm not so obsessed with that fact that I'd go to its board and bash it or its star.

actually I think this was one of his best performances. Him and Lily Collins have great chemistry and so do him and Kesley Grammer. I'm not sure if I buy that he is suppose to be Jewish, but, I still think he brought a lot to the role. Played it very understated yet powerful. I thought the scene when he first meets the German with Kelsey Grammer was fantastic. It's a different role for him, he was more charming than likeable

I guess you never saw Matt in the HBO movie "The Normal Heart" or Matt as Neal Caffery in "White Collar" (which both projects he has won awards for). He was terrific in those roles,as with this project; they fit him to a tee! By reading your commentary, those two things wouldn't be your cup-of-tea anyway.

BTW, "The Interestings" wasn't interesting at all...and SUCKED!!!!!!

reply

Wtf??

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

reply

Complete and UTTER nonsense, but then one should get used to pathetic threads like this, IMDb is full of them!!

He was SUPERB in this, and i rarely liked his acting, certainly not on White Collar!! But here, and in Normal Heart, he really showed that he can be a good actor!

And not only are you a hater, but you area definition of a hater!!! Bringin up his sexual orientation is really low, and reveals your entire post for what it is:; laughable!

reply

He was beautiful and magnificent in "White Collar," especially in the later seasons, when Neal CAFFREY (not "Cafferty") began to mature...Matt took the character from smart-alecky kid to mature man in 81 episodes...Perhaps you could watch the series again in its entirety...
And Matt was also BRILLIANT in "The Normal Heart"...And as Donovan, the tormented, damaged, love-obsessed Shakespearian hero in "American Horror Story: Hotel"...

reply

If he's a good actor, sexual orientation doesn't make any difference.

I disagree and not because I am a Matt's fan. I think he acted great, maybe you did not like the character or the nature of it but you can not say Matt ruined the character, I even think he brought a special shine to the character making it more charming and interesting than the character in the book who I found boring.

I prefer Matt's acting to De Niro's in 70's.Matt did not look bored or empty,he expressed a lot of emotions and feelings.
His passion for the cinema, his fascination for the new girl he met,the sweet way he treated Cecilia, like a little sister, his sadness for his dead wife Minna, his anger for the Germans and the business men..He played a lot of emotions fantastically and he is not a bad actor, you can see he is into the character completly and his scenes look totally realistic.

But you are free to think he ruined the pilot.

Wow! What a refreshing thread! 

So often when the OP begins with a negative about a show, film, or actor, people jump on quickly with more coals for increasing heat. I am delighted that people are speaking positively about Matt as an actor and for what he brought to this pilot, which I just discovered tonight.

When I saw that F. Scott had written it, I was going to give it a pass because his writing has not been a favorite. But, fortunately, seeing that Matt was the star, I watched it and found it mesmerizing. Because it is F. Scott, some story lines clearly have his signature writing on them; yet, with Matt in the lead, the story does not feel leaden as can happen. Matt is so natural that he provided a rhythm that easily moved it forward.

I loved the focus that he brought in his distress his brother-in-law's death and when he went to confession; that he wasn't Catholic, yet he needed to speak to the faith-based love of his wife and her brother. It felt very real, along with the energy that he expended in his daily life to manage his melancholy. It was extremely poignant.

When he asked the priest if he cared about films, where they important to him, the priest demurred and I said "yes" because I understood what he was asking. It was about passion and experiencing something to which you are so committed that your spirit sings with life because of it. The process of films is ultimately to bring X many minutes of magic to others. People who are gifted like Matt, Kelsey, Lily, and the others in this cast can interpret and bring writing to life. (This assumes that there is good writing to begin with.) 

As a teenager, I discovered and loved the films of the 30s. They were very powerful and amazingly diverse, including some dark spy thrillers. This is the first thread I have read, so I hope this series is going to be made and with this cast.

Here's looking at you, Monroe Stahr! 

A Checkered Life speaks of myriad diverse adventures being the rewards of endless curiosity.

I had only seen the original movie with Robert De niro, and I never even heard of this Matt Boomer before, nor have I ever seen him in anything prior to this pilot.
Boomer was terrific and perfect for this role, if you ever read the book then you realize how closer he is to the character than even how De Niro played it. I think your reasons of not liking Boomer seem more subjective than objective, your comparison to Cary Grant is also unfair, even Cary Grant once said "everyone wants to be Cary Grant, even I do". Grant did something for his time that was yes interesting and different and Boomer for our time, he is superb in this show, he does have charm huge screen presence. I think calling the guy famous Gay is also really is in poor taste. Who cares if the guy is Gay?..I didn't even know that but his performance is all I cared about.

In a time where all the shows and movies are about super heroes, Vampires and just dumb crap for Hollywood to create a show about that time period and cast it this well, with such a production, that is to me an accomplishment. I hope to see more of this show this year.
