It is racist to blackwash white characters, but it's acceptable to do it to whites, the only target left in society.

reply

No!!!! Never!!!!

Hoe about a Mexican Pan? Call him Pedro Pan?

reply

If Peter Pan can be played by WOMEN (of all ages) why not a black ''Pan''.

reply

He was played by women for the stage show for logistical reasons only and they didn't play him as female. They keep him as a boy.

The women made themselves to look like a short undeveloped boy. Women for this role can only be max 5 foot 5, not curvy, and play this role. So if a black person can make themselves look like a thin 10-16 year old white boy with brown hair and blue/brown eyes, then yes, they can play the role too.

That's funny as there are many "blacks" who are 10-16 years old in America so any of them can be given the role of Pan. Hey, there was a black Cinderella a few years ago.

Besides Hollywood for some reason keeps making $100 million+ Peter Pan movies which all continually bomb. From a monetary standpoint a black Peter Pan would be box office gold. The critics would back down so as not to appear racist, there would be a lot of buzz on Inside Edition/Extra etc. and a huge demographic i.e. the African American population would show up.

OF COURSE they kept him as a BOY. That was'nt my point.Even Veronica Lake (!) played Peter Pan on stage- flying suit and all.

reply

The original Peter Pan from the first Movie was played by a woman..

reply

Yes, but she played him as a *boy* not as female. As someone upthread said, a female has to have a certain shape to play Pan (ie. no boobs). Peter Pan was still a white boy when portrayed by females. Not the same thing as making him a person of color.

Well, for one, they could start with a Native American Tiger Lily.

How about a latino transsexual lesbian pan?

Funny you mention this. Mya-Lecia Naylor http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4166623/, an upcoming British actress of colour (Cloud Atlas, Tati's Hotel) took her chances and auditioned for the role, even though the casting call specifically requested boys: http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/feb/10/hollywood-bosses-search-peter-pan

Her audition tape: https://vimeo.com/81719997

Unfortunately, there was no way in hell Joe Wright would have ever cast a black girl as Peter. It would have been a welcome change, though.

Please, it might seem fresh with recent events to make political statements with roles, but I think it would be a shallow gimmick. A point to make a point.
