Tiger Lily...

I didn't watch this movie because when I watched the trailer I was really excited to watch it, but then I noticed something not right... Tiger Lily is white and blonde!!!!!! Am I the only one who was mad with this?

I do think it's a questionable choice. Heck, even Rooney Mara questioned it. What I don't understand is, why did she even go for the role? I know, money is money, but why don't actors stand up for this kind of thing? Especially when you know the main question journalists are going to ask you is 'Are you okay with the white-washing of this casting?'

And let's not pretend it's okay to make a Native American character white when they finally get a central, speaking part in a movie. This is not cool. The character is not only originally written to be Native American, but also the cast consists almost entirely of white European and American male actors, so it's noticeable if you have minorities play roles.

As far as the representation of minorities goes, it's a big deal when the biggest role by a woman in a film is white-washed (and, btw, there are only 3 or 4 women in this and they're all white).

Well you can take Rooney Mara's comments one of two ways: the first is that she's trying to distance herself from the controversy. As the film is a failure and no sequels will be made, she doesn't have to worry about bad mouthing it.

The second is that she might simply have not known. Actors generally don't know the full story or the full situation until they see the movie. They only know the parts they're in and the scenes they film. So she might not have known about the controversy until it came up online. She's offered the role of an action heroine in a big budget potential franchise and says yes. Then she later realises. If she's already agreed to the movie then she can't back out, because she could be sued for breach of contract. Actors can only back out of projects for legitimate reasons - like falling ill or commitments to other projects. Kim Basinger famously realised one film she was in would be a disaster, walked off and got sued into bankruptcy.

****Sigh*** .... As a previous poster indicated, where did "Native American" come from? Someone should read the book....

Secondly, this business of, "Black actor, Black character", "Asian actor, Asian character", "White actor, White character", "Chinese actor, Chinese character", "Korean actor, Korean character", "Russian actor, Russian character", et cetera, et cetera, et cetera........ I thought the point of "Actors" was that they portrayed someone other than themselves????? So what the hell is this new "Politically Correct" crap? So we should boycott "Shindler's List" because Ralph Fiennes is not a Nazi? "The Silence of the Lambs" because Sir Anthony Hopkins is not a cannibal? ...or "Mysterious Skin" because Joseph Gordon-Levitt is not a homosexual? Do you see how ridiculous this is?

Not really since if Tigar Lily was played indian no one would be complaining

yet when the leads are black washed nothing is said about them in Dragonball Z or Cloud Atlas

I just saw the movie this morning, and remembered the slight uproar about Rooney Mara being cast so I had to add my two cents. I've never read the book so I guess I would need to to answer this question. Does the book ever state that Tiger Lily is Native American? In the movie it just saw that she is from the Tribal Territory and "native", meaning native Neverlander, not Native American. Sooooo.....long story short, couldn't she look any way? I mean it's not like the rest of the "tribe" was Native American in other ways (dress, housing, etc). Part two: it's a FANTASY movie people! When people got shot they exploded into beautifully colored dust. That kinda takes away any sort of reality or connection to real life and history.
