God awful acting from Garrett Hedlund

I know this is a kid's movie but what the hell was up with his awful acting, it was SO hammy.

reply

Yes, it was a bad take on Han Solo and Indiana Jones. What were they thinking!?

reply

It was a great take on Han Solo and Indiana Jones. So hammy. It would be great if he could play Indy's son in the next Indiana Jones.

It was awful acting, his voice, facial expressions just way over the top. Terrible actor

reply

Agreed, I'm actually in the middle of watching it and came here looking to see if anyone else thought he was over the top. Didn't they watch dailies? How could they think his performance was good?

reply

I just watched it and thought the same thing.

reply

Ditto

reply

same here.

Just watched this. It was so fake sounding, I thought it was overdubbed.

reply

James Hook is supposed to be over the top.

reply

There is a marked difference between being over-the-top in a flamboyant, enjoyable way and just being absolutely dreadful at your job.

reply

I agree. That's exactly how Captain Hook is supposed to be, so why should he act any different? The voice reminds me of the "real" Hook, and his mannerisms are pretty much to the point.

Sand is overrated. It's just tiny, little rocks.

reply

Im not sure about this but grow up and watch death sentence once and tell me hedlund can't act!

reply

I´ve seen Garrett in nearly all of his movies. He´s an outstanding actor.
In this movie though, he doesn´t deliver. He just doesn´t fit in the context of the movie.

His character also looks like a regular guy in that crazy fantasy land! He might have tried to go for that over-the-top "charming wacky character", like Jack Sparrow, but his performance just feels terribly out of place.

It's a bummer. I was looking forward to Garret tackling a kids adventure movie.

reply

I don't know why but...I didn't hate him, it at least seemed that he was trying to have fun with the material whereas Rooney Mara looks uninterested and Hugh Jackman ranges from good to going so uncomfortably hammy.

reply

He really went over the top and not in a good way.
Occasional wink at the camera is acceptable but this was on kids' afternoon show level.
When you spend $150 million-ish on a film, at least act like you believe its surroundings.

I think he has some charm but here Hedlund was terribly misguided.
Why the director didn't stop him after take 1, I do not have a clue.

He is the reason I am here right now. This performance haunts me. I 'watched' this movie a few days ago and I still have THAT voice stuck in my head. It sounds like Jack Nicholson on raging amounts of cocaine, speaking to a child. Terrifying.

I thought of Jack Nicholson too with Garrett's performance in Pan.

reply

Well Jack Nicolson is a famous actor, almost as recognizable as Robin Williams, so saying Hedlund reminds you of Jack would be a compliment. Plus his over the top acting was sort of the comic relief to his character.

reply

Absolutely agree. I am giving it a first watch now and trying awfully hard to be fair about it (given the awful reputation), but Hook is just god awful in this. Besides sounding like he's a bit slow in the head, every line and expression is painfully exaggerated and over-enunciated. He sounds like a Brit trying to sound like John Wayne, and it's absolutely cringeworthy. The awful Ramones and Nirvana interpretations did not help this much either. The visuals are very interesting, but there's literally nothing else going for this fast-paced non-story so far, about an hour in.

reply

I'm actually watching this on HBO right now... and I came here because I've been thinking this exact thing and it's so distracting.

It's like watching a knock off Christian Slater/ trying to sound like Jack Nicholson, trying to act like Harrison Ford. It just doesn't work. Was he secretly trying to use this to audition for young Indiana Jones/Han Solo or something?

But then, it's not like the rest of the cast is exactly putting in a stellar performance either. Any of the scenes with Mara trying to pretend to coyly be interested in Hook... it hurts...

That nails it.
