Yep, that's how this film played it - that plus he was also a big Indiana Jones fan, you know, before the movies came out...I think?

If they were going to attempt something so ridiculous, they should have at least revealed it later on. Like, he calls himself Jimmy at first. He's doing his Indiana Jones thing and helping Peter and wooing Tiger Lily so the audience doesn't quite get what his deal is. Then...DUN DUN DUUUUUN! His last name is Hook 

At least try and get an interesting twist out of it.

I wonder if Hook is necessarily going to turn evil in any follow-ups? I always thought that Captain Hook was named after his hooked hand but now we have a character with an already suitable name for losing a hand.
