The Iron Fist Race Debate...

On many other forums lately people have been split on Iron Fist casting. Some people think it's a good opportunity for Marvel to cast somebody Asian while others think it's just silly to change his origin at all.

In response to that, here is an interesting article covering both sides of the arguement. What does everyone else think?

You know, I've never asked myself "why don't Zhang Yimou and Wong Kar-wai cast white actors as leads in any of their films"...am I behind the times?

You guys are everything that's wrong with our Western society these days. They call you social justice warriors because you're essentially a subgroup of Internet trolls/keyboard warriors with too much free time on your hands.

You aren't going to change the world behind your computer screens, not to mention the fact that you're reaching out to far fewer people this way than you might think you are.

people hate it when white actors take ethnic roles, blakc asian, doesnt matter. and i can understand this. thenthose same people argue that white roles shold be given to other ethninticities? can you say HYPOCRITES?

reply

I can say hypocrites, but it doesn't apply in the instance you described.

There is no debate. Danny Rand is caucasian. That's it.

I don't want to see Luke Cage turned into a white guy or an Asian. He's black. That's the source material. Stick to it. The source material is why we have these great shows in the first place. It's not racist. It's being true to the source material. I don't want to see T'Challa be white or Asian, either. They are what they are in the source material.

Now, if we want a kick ass Asian character? I'm all for a 10 season run of Shang-Chi, Master Of Kung Fu. Bring it on, especially if they have Fu Manchu rights to go with it, a father/son battle for the ages. I frickin' LOVE Fu Manchu and Shang-Chi, and I'd never suggest making Shang white or black or anything else, because he's Asian. That's the source material.

Personally I cringe at white guys doing martial arts all the time in movies and tv shows. But Danny Rand is an old character now and long established so it's not like we didn't know he'd be white... he's supposed to be.

Personally I'd like if instead of changing characters they bothered creating characters for us that are diverse. New black heroes, new Asian heroes, new Native American heroes, etc.

And if they'd stop making the powers based on some strange stereotype. Strong black guy, Asian girl shooting fireworks, and Native American girl who pulls your dreams from your head to turn against you. It's almost like total mockery.

It's not like they can't make new diverse characters. Changing the ethnicity of established characters is actually very lazy and shows that they don't really care.

Creating new heroes that are fun and creative from scratch would be impressive.

All that said anyone getting offended at the huge legion of white characters being changed to a different ethnicity needs to get several grips. Most heroes in comics are blond and blue eyed. That's why they've been changing them. Otherwise it would look like an Aryan supremacy rally.

This is why I loved Storm so much. She was creative and original. Only problem is they had to keep rubbing in that the locals were so stupid they thought she was a goddess. Hur hur funny joke guys.

Non-white heroes always seem to be the butt of some joke with both Marvel and DC. Don't even get me started on Man-Ape and Black Panther. Those two make me want to vomit.
