Was I the only one who thought Alec Baldwin was cheating on her?

There were a number of scenes where he announced he was working late, there was at least one time he suddenly had to take an important call and left the table. I kept saying to my wife, "he must be cheating on her," and kept waiting for that to be shown during the movie. But much to my embarrassment, it never happened! I didn't read the book, and if it's not in the book, that makes sense, but seeing so many films in my life, all the "cheating" conventions were there (or so I thought).

I think he just didn't want to be at home.

reply

I didn't.
i wouldn't expect such a cliche in a movie starring Julianne Moore
i understand why he left too, he couldn't see her like that
not a lot would understand how it is and i think it was worse for Lydia seeing her Mom like that
your kid would do all kinds of stupid things, he/she will grow up and get wiser so it is not a big deal
but your parents they won't get any wiser, it won't be any better and they are supposed to be your role models so it is too hard to watch them go down like this
very sad and touching movie for me.

It is never about what happened, it is only how you look at it!

I don't think he was cheating on her- I think he just was In total denial and didn't want to be around her!

I thought that as well, but thank God this wasn't the case. I believe we all assumed that because it is so typical, a middle aged man cheating on his loyal wife probably with a much younger assistant of his and keeping it a secret by coming up with excuses such as meetings and working late. It was a pleasant surprise, watching a caring husband look after his wife.

You are talking as if these are real people. They are characters, and characters only do what we are told they do, so speculating on what they might do behind the scenes is useless if the author doesn't tell us. Plenty of people work late and that is not automatically code for something else.

I just thought he was a workaholic like she was and as her disease progressed he retreated even more into his work to avoid watching her go downhill.
