Equilibrium??
minus the action... this sounds like the pseudo-love story in Equilibrium, only fleshed out. Guy Pearce is in this too huh? interesting... idk

"the whole world's on fire, isn't it?"
It looks a lot like The Island... and have elements from Equilibrium
shareIt reminded me a lot of Equilibrium and I came here to see if anyone thought the same. Unfortunately, this just seems as a common love story in a dystopian future.Equilibrium, however, was great.
sharewatching this movie now and i'm leaning more towards a Gattaca inspired movie.
it's like what if Gattaca was horrible and played by actors who sucked.
I'm 30minutes in and I wish i never started watching it. i'll prolly finish it that way i can know 100% how much i hated it and how much it sucked
I thought there were some commonalities. I understood that the reason the society in Equals is emotionless is because they are altered in the womb. Then whatever they did to the baby would wear off, for some, resulting in SOS. Their leaders seemed as emotionless as anyone else. And it didn't look like they had tried to purge society of art as a whole, although I never saw any decorative art. But where they lived in working, everything was lovely and harmonious.
Contrast Equilibrium. In Equilibrium every citizen had to do injections more than once a day. Their government was taking advantage of the citizenry in some way, because it seemed as though some secret war was happening. The Arts were out of bounds. The leaders allowed themselves to be exempt from Prozium. Equilibrium still kept the family unit, with the biological parents. And their buildings and surroundings were very bleak.
I could see Equilibrium being the beginning to where Equals arrived. Perhaps with Equilibrium we see the difficulty in getting society to accept life without emotion, but once they learned how to make the changes in utero, the need for daily injections was done with and they could fine tune their society. For example, leaving behind the family unit, which is unnecessary once you have no emotional attachment to your child. Then people can be trained more effectively to obey the State. I don't think Tetragrammaton would have liked surrending their guns and becoming regular citizens, but let's suppose they managed it. Then society could change its focus from policing itself to exploring outer space.
And there we go! ;) After a few generations, no one would even remember what life was like before.
I loved Equilibrium. Hate this movie. Logans Run is my favorite movie of all time. Hated this movie.
In Logans Run, there was a reason they were living in a bubble. The framework and reason for the culling was there. They escaped and saved everyone. They met cats for the first time. Learned what love was by hearing about it and feeling it as they escaped. Then they gave it back to save others.
In Equilibrium. Same thing. His friend was having a passionate love affair with a feral exciting political dissident who stored art. Then Bales character saves a puppy. Then realizes his reality is false as he learns about his children, his partner and even the powers that be, and then learns that there is an entire network of revolutionaries below his nose. We live and feel his transition... Then he erupts in emotion and saves the world...
This movie had useless dialogue that went nowhere. No interest in learning anything about the characters, why them, why it was the way it was, and they had no interest in change... It was a cold but depressing movie which is why it flopped...
You'd think the writers would know this and fix it before getting these actors on board... Strange...
