I had no idea this was based on Brian Nicols. This was a huge deal down here in Atlanta when that happened. And THAT DUDE of all people is getting his own *beep* movie?!?!?
Hell, why stop there? Where's Charles Manson's "He Was Just Misunderstood" movie? Or Ted Bundy? John Wayne Gacy? The BTK Killer? I'm SURE there was a nice guy side to all of them too that you can expose to the audience while playing uplifting piano music in the background.

shareThe film was released in Germany on September 17. IMDb opens the ratings when a film is released in a territory. The Martian is not available to the public, but is open for ratings on IMDb because it's been screened at TIFF (Captive has too). You can argue it shouldn't be opened until official release, but some people have seen the film. And early reviews create early buzz.
shareFor me, there were too many loopholes e.g., how she could have gotten away, jurt him, etc., along with how he immediately took to the Purpose Driven Life as did she. Also weird was how she formed a bond with him yet I know she did some of that for survival, but a lot of it appeared to be a genuine bond for him. Also could have been residual drug effects since she had only been clean for 2 days. Movie wasn't bad though.
shareIt's hard to claim loopholes in a true story. He did take her hostage when she went for cigarettes. She did give him meth to gain his trust which is when he untied her. She refused to take Meth when he offered it to her even though she took some earlier that day. They did go and dispose of the stolen truck. She even did read the purpose driven life though in reality she offered to read it rather than him requesting she read it aloud.
Though the real Brian Nichols is far less sympathetic and redeeming than his portrayal. He is really a terrible human being. But really I think it's meant to be more about Ashley Smith kicking her drug habbit via this hostage situation.
I did NOT get a "genuine" bond portrayed at all. She was terrified when she left, running to her car and shaking in fear. If anything it was an attempt to survive so she could be with her daughter.

shareThe movie is based on the book written by Ashley Smith, the woman held captive. It's what happened really happened here in Atlanta 10 years ago, and she really read from the book to him, he gave himself up, was found guilty on 54 charges and is state prison with no chance of parole.

Based upon the few things that I have read about it, I don't know how much I would enjoy this movie. In my personal opinion, after actually living through that manhunt in Atlanta, it sounds like they are making both of them sound a whole lot better than they were. He was an awful person who was going on trial for holding his ex-girlfriend hostage, beating and raping her repeatedly, for what I believe to have been several days. While awaiting his trial in the courthouse, he killed his transport officer and was able to escape custody. The entire city was terrified because he was a very violent man on the loose, with nothing to lose, and no one knew who his next target would be or where he was heading. My roommate and I were terrified to leave our condo as he was spotted in our area of Buckhead. Finding any empathy with his character will be difficult for me--even though I realize this is just "based upon those events." Maybe people who are unfamiliar with this case will find it easier to enjoy...who knows?
Basically the guy is scum so they write this story and with hold bits and try to make you feel sympathy for him because it sells god better.
The reality is this guy does not deserve a film because he is the lowest of the low and to use that to push a religious agenda is very distasteful.

It was only like twenty years ago you had Tim Robbins (not a religious man) make a movie like Dead Man Walking. I guess people would freak about that movie today.
There are religious people in the world--a lot of them. To treat religion like it doesn't exist, or to resort to nothing but silly caricatures, is an unrealistic portrayal of the world and of humanity.
