That it is, mesmerizing! Plus, the ending credits are possibly the most stirring I think I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, the experience was marred for me by audio which was incompatible with the stunning visuals. There's a story to follow here and it became almost impossible at times because of said inadequate audio. There was no set-up option on the DVD, hence no subtitles so I lost significant segments of dialogue key to the story. It wasn't until I saw an interview at the end with the film maker in the bonus features that I was able to finally get some questions answered.

Very innovative, creative work, however.

So the animation worked for you, I gather, seeing as you've called it mesmerising.

Now I'm very curious to see the ending credits. Can you give a hint on why they're so stirring for you?

I'm glad you enjoyed it, except for the poor audio and lack of subtitles causing you to miss swathes of dialogue.

reply

Yes , no problem with the animation whatsoever. I knew I was going to be frustrated the moment I saw that the disc had no set-up feature. I had the volume twice as high as I usually do (and I don't have a hearing problem) but it still seemed muffled at times. All the characters spoke in accents, sometimes in low tones, whispers.

As for the credits, it involved the gradual turning of the pages of a limited edition book (only 100 available in English, I believe) coupled with "Starry, Starry Night" playing in the background ( no problem with the audio there). It was just a final creative touch, much more enjoyable than a long, boring list of names moving down the screen.

I had an opportunity to see the movie in the early fall at a local avant garde theater but I wasn't able to. It involved an audience discussion at the end. In hindsight, I see that would have been ideal and I'm even more disappointed now that I missed it.

So, do you think you're now curious enough to give it a watch?

I hate having to strain to hear dialogue. You'd think with all the effort they put into this film, they'd have done better with the audio.

The ending credits do sound creative and interesting.

Too bad you couldn't go to that showing. I'd think seeing it on a big screen, given how heavy it is on visuals, and being able to have a discussion after the viewing would have been a great way to see it.

Definitely more curious. I'll wait until I'm in the mood to take on an animated film. Probably 10 minutes in, it won't matter to me and I'll get caught up in the visuals and other content.

Well Cat, you can get a good sampling of the animation just by watching the trailer on this board. There's no problem with the audio there either. You can also see that book on YouTube. The guy narrating it is a bit rambling and tedious and the way he leafs through it doesn't depict its content as nicely as in the credits scene but you can nevertheless get some more detailed information. I'll be likewise curious about your reaction to it if and when you ever see it.

reply

I saw the trailer when it was released, and watched it again the other day when you mentioned this movie, so I have a good idea of what to expect as far as the animation.

I'll see it because I'll watch just about anything Van Gogh, but it's not often I'm in the mood to see an entirely animated film so I'll wait until I am.

We're definitely on the same page with your second comment.

Do you have Prime? If so, last night I watched a documentary on him called The Painting Life of Vincent Van Gogh. It was good.

reply

No I don't but I'll look it up. Thanks.

I just found it on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T750HY_ZcZo

On a related note and also an interesting coincidence, I watched this very cool story early this morning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG5AogjcbtA

reply

Wow. Can you imagine? I hope someone makes a doc on this. I'd watch it.

reply

It's on the show mentioned in the clip, Strange Inheritance. I just tried to find it in its entirety on YouTube because that's the best way to really appreciate the story. It's about 30 min in length. Maybe you'll have better luck.

reply

Oh, I thought it was just a brief news story. I'll look for it. Thanks.

reply

Somewhat OT for this board, but I just watched an interview with David Hockney on VVG and thought you might be interested in seeing it.

Haven't had a chance to look at it except for a brief scan but thanks for the link once again.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience regarding the audio - that's a real shame!

I saw 'Loving Vincent' at a media screening in a small theater (before it's wider release in cinemas) and the sound design complimented the lush visuals.

of what?

Yeah, of what?

Sometimes when something seems this super duper awesome I get anxious to actually watch it. Maybe because I think either it won't be as awesome as I imagine it and then I'll be sad, or it will be as awesome and I'll have to watch it a hundred times and obsess over it, depleting my life force, or it will be more awesome and my head will 'splode like in Scanners. 😟

😄 Oh!

Should I just rip the band-aid off?
Current status: wearing my Van Gogh socks and feeling nervous. 🤢

reply

Let 'er rip, I say! You're already wearing the right footwear. That has to be a sign from the universe.
