Why are the ratings so low.

This season has been good way better than last season so I don't understand. I hope empire gets picked up for season 4.

Season 3 is better than Season 2 in terms of writing, IMO. The show has more true soap opera writing now. More storylines coming together and more families versus families and also class differences. It is more like the old Dynasty and Dallas shows.

What has dropped the ratings is that the show has too many breaks.

If you can recall in its first season when ratings increased with almost every episode, there were not many breaks so the show's ratings and press seemed to build and build week after week. The ratings had momentum.

Contrast that with the way it is now--the show may show new episodes for about 4 weeks and then a break before another episode.

Often, the audience is confused as to when the new episodes are being shown.

Now, with streaming and on demand, people can catch up once they know a new episode is on but the Nielsen ratings still go by overnight first time viewings for ratings and then add the demand/repeat multiple showings in later.

If the initial overnights look lower, then an episode's ratings are reported to be lower--the additional showings are added in later and may be a separate news story.

Long story short: they need to stop all the breaks, advertise more like they did the first season and the ratings will improve.

JMHO.

This IMO is precisely the problem. S1 was a hit because it started in January and aired with minimal interruptions. It kept it's momentum. This season has had far superior writing quality and storylines than S2 ever did at any point.

S2 had an advantage of riding off of the momentum S1 had built so people were still very much hooked on the show when S2 began that it really enjoyed some good ratings at the beginning despite the poor writing. However, eventually the poor writing took it's toll as the ratings gradually declined.

S3 had more of an uphill battle. It had to rebuild that good story-telling image, get it's audience very much interested in the show again, create buzz and regain it's momentum. IMO, I think the writers achieved all that but the frequent breaks killed that momentum.

The ratings were at 3+ after coming back from the 3 weeks break due to baseball and guess what? When the audience got all excited were trying to get engaged again, it was off for Thanksgiving. People got really confused and some even thought the season was over.

Next week is the winter finale and they will not return until March. This means, they will have had at least a 5 month break during one season alone. How is the audience expected to keep the interest and the excitement going? Makes no sense to me at all.

IMO, just start the show in January and air it with minimal breaks through May. That way, you BUILD your momentum and KEEP it going to reach it's fever pitch at the finale.

TV rating are down all over because 2 "stars" RULED the airwaves this Fall.......Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. That is the reason ratings are down for everybody, including the bullet-proof NFL.

I don't buy that excuse at all. You can't break a show up multiple times in just the first half of the season and not expect to affect it's ratings negatively.

This first half of Empire had only 9 episodes but there were at least 2 breaks in-between. Compare that with S1 which only had like 8 episodes for the entire season with little or no breaks in-between. People were left confused as to when the show returns, where the story ended, if the season was over e.t.c
There is no doubt that the breaks definitely killed the show's momentum. Yes the ratings are down across the board but Empire would have reached higher ratings than it has right now. It was 3+ just before Thanksgiving break!!!!

If they want this show to do better IMO, they might want to reconsider those breaks that they are taking in-between. It is definitely a momentum killer IMO.
