True story. Haters need to do their research.

Phoebe Gloeckner wrote this book based off of her own diary at age 15. She says she even included entire unedited passages. There is some embellishment but the core of the story is true. She did have an affair with her mother's boyfriend. There actually was a Monroe and her mother actually sucked. So everyone complaining that this is self indulgent and creepy and trite needs to shut up because this actually happened to a human person. True stories are worth telling!

The "haters" on this thread have a point that it being true is no defense. But it is not necessarily "self-indulgent" to write something autobiographical. Personally, I would have fictionalized something like this (and there's no way of knowing that Phoebe Gloeckner didn't).

As for the other stupid idea that you can't write or make movies like this because it's "creepy" or "trite", that's ridiculous. People make mistakes in life and do dumb, regrettable things growing up, but I'd much rather watch a REAL movie about coming-of-age than pandering teen never-never land bullsh*t like "Twilight". Nothing insulted me more when I was in my turbulent teenage years than having to endure saccharine Hollywood sh*t like "The Breakfast Club" where all real problems can be solved with a fairy-tale ending and everyone lives happily ever. I actually LOVED "River's Edge" when it came out, not because my friend's actually ever murdered each other, but because that is EXACTLY what it was like being a teenager back then in my experience while the f^cking "Breakfast Club" wasn't even close.
