The "haters" on this thread have a point that it being true is no defense. But it is not necessarily "self-indulgent" to write something autobiographical. Personally, I would have fictionalized something like this (and there's no way of knowing that Phoebe Gloeckner didn't).
As for the other stupid idea that you can't write or make movies like this because it's "creepy" or "trite", that's ridiculous. People make mistakes in life and do dumb, regrettable things growing up, but I'd much rather watch a REAL movie about coming-of-age than pandering teen never-never land bullsh*t like "Twilight". Nothing insulted me more when I was in my turbulent teenage years than having to endure saccharine Hollywood sh*t like "The Breakfast Club" where all real problems can be solved with a fairy-tale ending and everyone lives happily ever. I actually LOVED "River's Edge" when it came out, not because my friend's actually ever murdered each other, but because that is EXACTLY what it was like being a teenager back then in my experience while the f^cking "Breakfast Club" wasn't even close.
