Does anyone else find it unrealistic...

that the captor didn’t check to see if Jack was really dead? I don’t know anything about criminal psychology or anything, but after going to all those lengths to keep Joy and Jack hidden, and after treating Joy like an animal, it doesn’t make sense to me that he would just take her word for it that Jack was dead, and agree not to look at him.

I'll trade you my t-shirt for a grilled cheese!

It was very unrealistic, as was the whole escape plan, that the child would know WHEN to roll, WHEN to jump, etc while having zero exposure to cars, velocity, etc is pretty farfetched. Too bad author wasn't clever enough to have a more believable escape.

They practiced escaping the rug, but as for the jumping and escaping?
Yeah, Jack did a terrible job, and got caught.
It was only the presence of the stranger with the dog that the plan worked.

Ma's only plan was that Jack got out that door. She hoped that whatever happened, Jack would not end up returned to Room. Which I can presume was unlikely, as hauling a shouting child into a shed in your back yard is not a good idea.

I always got the impression that Old Nick didn't give a damn about Jack.
And I believe most people would probably prefer not to look at a dead human if they didn't have too. I certainly wouldn't.

Lot of great points raised in this thread. Would also like to add that Nick immediately believes he is dead, and also immediately demonstrates how little impact it has on him. "Poor girl," he mutters. He cannot fathom her attempting to deceive him and does not view Jack's death as a momentous event because it isn't really about him, so his brain quickly moves on to disposing the body. He may have checked the body in Room, but she makes it impossible, and once he's outside, there's no way he's going to risk it.

I do agree that the rest of the plan playing out exactly as it did was a little much, but that was the point of the movie and the novel it is based on: someone locked away for seven years finally escapes. It has to happen somehow, and just having the door open one day and police enter would not be very satisfying. The whole scene of his escape was freaking enthralling, thrilling, and beautiful.

Yupp felt the same.

Even if you go with the "He believed her because he had control", but why would he drive around in broad Daylight with the corpse of a kid in a rug?

reply

I don’t think Old Nick was really smart at all. Joy knew he was kind of simple like guy and could out smart him with Jack.
