Bautista = Tong Po?

Is Bautista even remotely Asian? I honestly don't know, but he certainly doesn't look it...

And does he have any experience with kickboxing or Muay Thai?

reply

He have the shape to be the bad guy whatever his origins are. I know an asian called Martine.

reply

Just remembering that Scott Adkins and Tony Jaa are no longer attached to the project.

As others have mentioned, Michel Qissi wasn't remotely Asian either.

Having said that though, they should have had an Asian as Tong Po at least this time around or at least, if they had to have Bautista, they could had him as another villain. They didn't have to bring back Tong Po again.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

reply

Again Batista is Filipino

He is half-Filipino and in any case Tong Po is supposed to be Thai.

Yeah he is Half but still looks it and the actor does not have to be Thai just Southeast Asian descent which Batista is. A Filipino actor playing a Thai character is no different than a white Brit or Aussie actor playing a White American character.

But that's just it. He doesn't look it. He looks more white than Southeast Asian.

Keanu Reeves has Chinese ancestry, but that doesn't mean he could play a Chinese character.

You are the First Person I have heard say that

That looks like a white man to you?

Bad comparison Keanu is only like a 1/4 Chinese of course he could not play a Chinese character

I said he looks more white than Southeast Asian. I never said he looks totally white. But he doesn't look much like a Southeast Asian either.

Anyway, lets just agree to disagree. At any rate, I like Batista, so I really don't have a big problem with him playing Tong Po.

Why are you guys complaining about this? The original Tong Po also was not Asian! Michel Qissi who portrayed the original Po is from Moroccan-Belgian origin!

reply

Ok lots of people here saying he has the right "body look" to play Tong Po. It seems like i'm the only one who has a problem with this. Batista looks like a body builder. Kickboxers are lean and muscular. Tong Po, the original, was as big as a kickboxer gets. A guy as big as Batista just doesn't exist in that world. He would be very slow and clunky. I don't buy it.

reply

Agree, Batista looks more like a body builder than a Kick boxer, even if he's got some grappling and stand up experience. The reason you don't get over muscled combat sports fighters is because they gas in a round. Too many muscles and not enough oxygen and not enough athleticism to get high kicks off and not quick enough to evade strikes etc.

Saying that my favorite Kickboxer is Jérôme Le Banner

He's a monster and about the biggest guy in Kickboxing/K1 that's had a successful career. He's done some acting too and was one scary dude in Babylon A.D. not sure he could be transformed into Tong Po mind.

Shame about Scott Adkins, great martial artist and not too shabby actor as well. He was excellent in the Undisputed movies (looking forward to the new one) and also enjoyed him in Ninja: Shadow of a Tear & Assassination Games.
