James Wan serves up another copy and paste, formulated, watered down mess of a film for the lowest common denominators in society.
The most I've heard from people worshipping this hack and praising The Conjuring 2 is "it made so much money, money=substance and artistic merit. It's rated 10004545454504545000% on some rigged *beep* website like this one. He is da best, screw you, you hater. The paid critics said this movie is good".
I'm genuinely asking people what makes this movie in any way shape or form 'good'? It is so devoid of creativity and thought. Most of the 'scary' scenes were cheap jump scares (Wan's trademark) accompanied by a loud bass thump or someone yelling. This is obviously the extent of Wan's creative ability. He's incapable of creating tension or atmosphere, and still insists on showing stupid antagonists with painted faces.
The religious theme annoyed me as well. It's not because I am an atheist, its just been done to death. Where is the ambiguity? Why is every event in his movies spoon fed to the audience and explained? Wan needs to learn that what you don't see is scarier. The fear of the unknown.
Where does it say that producing a crucifix will ward of something you have no possibility of ever explaining? Maybe the supernatural experience you are enduring is from space? Or another dimension that is not related to religion what so ever?
You only really have to focus on the ending of The Conjuring 2 to see the juvenile mind of James Wan. Edd Warrens demise was supposed to involve falling from a top floor window and being impaled by a tree branch??? LOL.
And apparently once Lorraine knew the demons name she was able to send it packing to where it came from. What????
Cue happy sentimental ending dancing to Elvis Presley.......dear oh dear.
You have no idea what you're talking about. This movie is full of tension. I thought it was great and I have seen over 1500 horror movies. It's not very original, but so what? When a movie is that entertaining, thrilling, effective and well made, originality isn't very important.
Garbage post anyway. "Oh critics gave positive reviews to a movie I didn't like, they must have been paid!" "Oh a lot of people think this movie is good, but I don't think it's good, so they must be totally stupid!"
CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

And I could apply the same theory to you. "Oh everyone loves this hollow, vacuous, but economically viable movie so I will love it too. I'll jump on the band wagon because I don't have a mind of my own". Or, as the case may be, you actually have god awful taste and are easily amused. It's ok to admit this :)
I clearly do have an idea of what I'm talking about. That's obvious to anyone with half a brain. You are trying to polish a turd, Give it up.
Here we go again. "I don't like this movie, so people who like it must not have minds of their own" You're so fcking immature. How old are you? 16? You can't be much older than that when you insult people only because they like things you don't like.

I don't give a toss if you like it or who likes it, thats fine, you have every right to like it, thats your choice and you're entitled to it. Just don't sit there and tell me it's anything more than sub par 'entertainment'. Thats what my whole thread is about. Sigh.
Not at all. Great horror movies have few jump scares and when they do they are more substantial than Wan's, where some demon just pops out, screams and proceeds to do nothing else.
James Wan serves up another copy and paste, formulated, watered down mess of a film for the lowest common denominators in society.
A bit rude of a starting point "lowest common denominators in society" that sentiment could actually be applied to horror fans in general from say...drama film fans perhaps.
Either way James Wan does have a formula and he follows it pretty much to a T. Thankfully that formula was not based off of Dead Silence because that movie is absolute trash.
The most I've heard from people worshipping this hack and praising The Conjuring 2 is "it made so much money, money=substance and artistic merit
That's a terrible argument and people should not use it.
I'm genuinely asking people what makes this movie in any way shape of form 'good'? It is so devoid of creativity and thought
Kind of hard to do creative with a ghost flick following Ed and Lorraine. Not taking a shot at them but you know from jump it's going to be about them Vs something. You know what you're getting into before you go.
I thought the things like subtle layouts of the demons actual name throughout the movie was pretty interesting. The fact she did not check the bible because she likely thought the demon just made her deface it was thought out, but people just look over it for whatever reason.
The opening sequence at the Amityville house (before the basement part) where she reenacted the killing was really erie. I loved that, and thought it was probably the only real "creative" aspect of the film. Once it got to the basement with the nun it was more of the same.
It's a decent movie and I enjoyed it for what it was, but it is in no way great or a masterpiece. It is what it is, a ghost flick with jump scares. Everyone should have known that going into it so to compare it to things like Hellraiser is a very strange thing to do. Not to mention that's in a completely different sub-genre of horror as it is.

While I agree with this for the most part. The what you don't see did not work for It Follows. That movie was terrible imho and it was beyond vague. Even gave rules that the creature did not even follow. Fear of the unknown is a huge thing for horror movies in some cases but even great ones did not follow this. Evil Dead I, II, Hellraiser(I am so sorry I keep mentioning this it's a personal favorite), Serpent and the Rainbow, etc...while there are some fabulous horror flicks that do hold that unknown very, very well.
Where does it say that producing a crucifix will ward of something you have no possibility of ever explaining?
People just reacting out of fear thinking god will save them from anything and everything that is "evil"
Maybe the supernatural experience you are enduring is from space? Or another dimension that is not related to religion what so ever?
They'd still try honestly, they would still try to use a crucifix. Not going to lie it'd be humorous.

If you are of the thought James Wan has a juvenile mind the entire movie would be evidence enough not just the ending.
Edd Warrens demise was supposed to involve falling from a top floor window and being impaled by a tree branch??? LOL.
I think the little girl would've died as well, but yep the plan was to impale him.
And apparently once Lorraine knew the demons name she was able to send it packing to where it came from. What????
Goes hand in hand with the whole religion thing. As crazy as it sounds that is actually a thing. Knowing the name of the demon gives you dominion over them.
Cue happy sentimental ending dancing to Elvis Presley...
Really didn't have a problem with this. It was just a happy ending.

When someone makes a thread like this I am always inclined to ask what scary movies the OP think are good.
Then I just wait for a response of indy low budget sht movies like babadook or something like that where the monster looks like I made it in paintbrush in windows 3.1
I'm the guy who makes the "worst movie ever" thread in your favorite movie board

And you still haven't answered which horrors you do think are good lol. Looks like you are insecure with your taste and are afraid of being ridiculed. That is funny.

Then why do so many sycophantic lemmings hail this idiot as a 'master of horror'? Answer-it's made for the lowest common denominator.

It's not made for the lowest common denominator lol. You can think that, and it's your opinion that's fine. However it was made to be an entertaining ghost story nothing more. The lowest common denominator may think it's a world star masterpiece but that's on them and this certainly isn't.
If you want true LCD then you should find someone who thinks "The Room" is actually an excellent movie. Then I wouldn't be able to argue your point. However what you're doing here is just finding a clever way to call people idiots, morons, dumba$$es because they think this movie is a masterpiece. While it is not a masterpiece they aren't automatically stupid for thinking so. They might simply be very...very....very easily entertained, and possibly have lower standards than most.

I think you're taking it too seriously. What I liked about it is how it was just a fun thriller, didn't hold itself in perfectly high regard, but had an engrossing enough story and script, good camerawork, lighting and acting (in parts) to justify itself as a well-made horror film. I think it's best when horror films aren't overly serious, and when they just focus on scaring people and delivering thrills. Reminded me more of Insidious than The Conjuring 1.
I agree with what you're saying but funny enough, EXCEPT your criticism of the ending with the elvis presley thing. If anything, Ed+Lorraine Warren's love story kinda saved the movie for me, lol.
angry atheist detected. Some people believe in God and his power over demons. Get over it. And yes, this is no Exorcist, but it is a solid entertaining horror.
