Why didnt the wolves attack Sher Khan on killing Akela?

considering that for years they have been chanting strenth of the wolF is in the pack and the pack is in the wolF ,why in the world did sher khan walk away without a scratch from his pack, after attacking akela the leader itself!!seriously?

its almost like it was a formula:1 main character has to die but sher khan to fight at end with mowlgli only as big climax

that part was disappointing

It stands to reason that it was still not that kind of tale later in the film when Akela was killed.

I have to admit even though the wolves were computer animated I still got a little teary eyed when akeka died, I can't help it, as a kid I loved wolves and still do, I own two huskies because to me they are the closest thing to having a wolf ?
