Something very out of character spoilers

When the guy with cancer woke up and sat by the stairs while Jimmy is in the house, Jimmy grabs a vase. At first I thought he might drop it from the loft to distract the guy so he can escape, but we are led to believe that Jimmy was about to smash the vase over his head. Really? I find that hard to believe. He has never shown any proclivity for violence before, no matter how desperate or cornered. That part bugged me. The writers could have done better.

With Saul trying to hit the dude with the vase, yelling at Kim on the phone and Saul trying to hurt Marion....

....it seems to me the writers wrote the worst version of Saul possible because they are going to put him away in actual jail for the rest of his life. And they didn't want the viewers to feel bad about it. They really wanted the viewers to side with them in thinking that Saul deserves a life sentence in jail.

As a matter of fact, I think this even started in "Point and Shoot" in which Saul urges Lalo to send Kim to shoot Gus. He send her out to actually kill somebody while he can safely wait with Lalo. And Lalo always came across as the type of criminal to just tie you in a chair, NOT a guy who would abuse you for fun. This on the count of the fact that he let himself get talked down by Kim in season 5. Lalo clearly respects women, so Saul was already jailworthy in "Point and Shoot" for bein such a coward.

Yes! This was another very out-of-character moment. The way he was winding that telephone cord around his hands like he was about to garrote Marion. That was just bizarre.

As a matter of fact, I think this even started in "Point and Shoot" in which Saul urges Lalo to send Kim to shoot Gus. He send her out to actually kill somebody while he can safely wait with Lalo.

This also left me stunned as it was playing out. But then later Kim explained that he did that to get her out of the house and to safety (presumably because he knew that Mike would recognize her and intervene), so it gets a pass I guess. But Jimmy's other actions are inexcusable.

No, he send her out so she has a chance to survive this.
How did you not realize that? His facial expressions towards her were clear.

Actually, it was an Urn that contained the ashes of cancer guys dog.

I think that part and also him hesitating for a moment and clearly thinking about hurting Marion to prevent her calling the cops on him was a sign that he simply lost control and started to turn into something worse.

Strongly doubt this was a "writing mishap", not when we consider the quality of literally the whole series, which was mostly flawless.

Yep was a moment of what have I become, he went from Sandpiper and Elder Law looking out for the elderly to considering choking Marion out and he knew as you say he'd lost control. Figuring if he did do it, he would never come back from it, plays into the whole time machine part as well, which as Walter pointed out was really just regret and that would be his biggest one. Killing Marion he would forever want to go back and stop himself, all those scenes prior to that all come together as the show progresses to that scene with Marion and beyond.
