I didnt realize how much I liked Howard until Jimmy and Kim started escalating their schemes against him, combined with his show of guilt over Chuck and his crumbling marriage, the end was such a stark contrast to whatever karma, if any, he deserved. He might've been unlikable to some viewers, but not so unlikable to deserve that kind of malice.
There are several instances where I gained respect for his character: his challenging jimmy to the boxing match in the ring to hash out their differences. Jimmy was passive aggressive and sneaky and Howard was willing to just let it all air out in the open and give jimmy a chance to let his steam off in a fair(er) fight. That's class. Also his offering jimmy a job back with HHM despite knowing jimmy was shifty. His speech to jimmy and Kim at the end was really poignant and spot on, he could see they were borderline sociopaths and he called them out on it. You could tell they knew everything he said was true. It was a bit like Nacho's final speech to Hector. He just didn't know it would be his last.
There was another comment somewhere that Howard dying the way he did was EXACTLY what Jimmy and kim deserved to see. The trauma of witnessing the brutal execution of a man they were conspiring to tear down really is such karma. Its possibly the only thing that could've made them feel any guilt for their actions. Howard actually seemed to have a bit of an arc, despite being a minor character and this was just perfection from the writers to really understand how we felt about him after all.
