Could someone please explain this because one minute she's driving down the road and then the next an airbag randomly explodes in her face. It was shown pretty clearly that her car drove off the side of the road and ran straight into a rock. Surely there would have been at least some sort of shaking as her vehicle drove into the ditch. It was just completely random, but maybe I'm missing something here. It just doesn't seem like the writers would fuck up something like this, seeing as how they've made a pretty good show thus far. Don't get me wrong, I like the scene, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Any explanations?
I was a bit confused as well. I think she might've dosed off behind the weel. She's been exhausted for weeks, even with the Mesa Verde account. And now with this new one, she's getting even less rest. So, maybe she just fell asleep.
This is what I thought since it happens in an almost dreamlike way. The shot is focused on her instead of her driving. It's as if we are experiencing what she experienced. If she was alert, then it would have been shot differently.
I am confused about that part because in the clip, her face didn't really dose off. If the director was trying to convey that she was falling asleep at the wheel, then he didn't do that great of a job at it. I understand that her work was stressful for her, but as she was driving, it didn't really look like she was tired. Perhaps the director should have directed her more in her acting... idk.
I dozed off behind the wheel once at the end of a 28 hour journey that included packing and unpacking a 24 foot moving van and driving over 2,000 miles. I was really tired, but so close to home I was sure I could make it. I do not remember falling asleep at all. One minute I'm awake the next I'm jolted awake by the sensation of swerving. I regained control right before smashing into the center divider. There was no dozing off. I was just so tired(like Kim surely was) that I lost consciousness for a few seconds(I doubt it was much longer) without warning.
It was hinted a few episodes ago when she set the alarm in the car, and the next thing you know is that the alarm was already ringing. It was the same execution. They were trying to show us how tired she is. She can fall asleep quickly and has to be drinking coffee constantly. It was great.
Yes, she dozed off. That's how it happens. We were experiencing it from her perspective. If we had actually watched her falling asleep, then it would be our perspective. I thought it was well-done. It was like we were "waking up" the same time that she did.
I think you may need to watch that scene again. She may have fallen asleep as others have suggested, but I don't think that is what is implied. You can see from the aftermath of the car crash that the road had a very sharp curve, and my interpretation was that she simply was too focused on the details of the presentation/case, almost in a daze, that she didn't notice the curve. This would be possible if she were travelling at a high speed based on what the curve looked like.
However, other posters may be right that it was implied that she fell asleep, but the way the scene cut so quickly that's not how I viewed it. I will rewatch it later today.
Kim's not that stupid. It's all the work she put in to handle two clients that made her sleepy. Also, the stress from Jimmy not being able to work anymore. She has had to deal with his fall from his job and contributing to the business. Their relationship has changed because of Slippin' Jimmy changing the address on the Mesa Verde documents..
She was just distracted and thinking about what she was going to say at her meeting. She just wasn't paying attention at all.
She was running late, and trying to prepare for her meeting and didn't even realize her car had veered off the road. And neither did we, because the writers were putting us in her place. So we would be as stunned as she was.
If she hadn't hit that rock, her car would have plummeted off the cliff, killing her. So in that way, she was pretty fortunate.
Not sure what everyone is so confused about here. Anyone familiar with this show (and Breaking Bad) is familiar with the artistic style. We've seen many incidents in the POV of other characters and Gilligan has made many scenes out to be surreal and/or gritty/realistic.
It's as simple as this: she either dosed off or spaced out. No great mystery here.
She fell asleep at the wheel. That is how it works when you fall asleep, the last thing you remember is not the moment of the accident, you wake up when you crash but you have no memory of how it happened. So what we see on screen is what she saw and what she remembered. There is a blackout (time missing) when she was asleep.
In her mind, one minute she's driving and the next thing she knows she's off the road and bleeding. The time in between, she was asleep and her car drifted across several lanes.. So we don't see that happen, because she didn't see it.
I was driving up the M6 motorway from Chester to Carlisle fighting like hell to shake off the feeling of tiredness and the next thing I knew was I had drifted out of my lane into the overtaking lane and had no idea how I had got there. Scared the pants off me because had there been traffic alongside me it could have been a serious accident. I jolted awake so must have fallen a sleep for less than a second and that's what I think happened to Kim to cause her accident. It was a brilliant bit of TV and a bit to close to home for my liking, if I'm honest. I will never ever drive again trying to fight being tired.
The worst nightmare would be to wake up and you are alive but you killed other people. I feel like living with that guilt would be worse than dying yourself.
