Anyone watched S3 episode 1?

Just watched it myself and would be interested to know what any other Outlander fans thought of it! It's been too long without a Jamie/Claire fix! My husband hasn't watched any of the seasons, but suddenly informs me that "this looks good!"

reply

My husband and I watched it last night. I thought it was really well done, but it was so sad! It was so hard (for me) to watch the battle. And it was just hard to watch Jamie wanting to die and not dying and Claire trying to adjust to her new life. Ug!

On the plus side ... Baby Bree!!!

reply

Season 2 was so boring that I cannot bare watching anymore. Plus, I hate Claire. I like that Black Jack character though. He keeps things interesting.

reply

For a premiere it was underwhelming. Good thing that the production values are still great and the acting is top notch, because the writing is silly. I actually laughed out loud when the last men standing were Jamie and Black Jack. I also couldn't care less about Claire's adjustment to the new life and her pregnancy, but hey, I'm a guy, so...

So far season 1 is one of the best tv products I've ever enjoyed, season 2 was boring and season 3 is off to a shaky start.

reply

I don't think Jamie and Black Jack were actually the last men standing. It just seemed that way to them when they found themselves facing each other. The scenery went a bit blurry and other-worldly at that point which was meant to suggest everything else ceased to exist for them at that moment.

reply

Didn't notice. Yeah, I can see that. Unfortunately it's a lukewarm cliché, so it doesen't make it better. Then again I was hoping to see a manly battle, not a dreamy sequence that really didn't add anything to the relationship between BJ and Jamie. Yeah, I know, closure. Nothing that a good stab in the chest without fancy editing wouldn't achieve.

reply

Same opinion as Taffybird. They were NOT literally the last men standing. The change in the background to make it seem "unreal" is one clue. To them, there was no other battle going on around them.

I am a woman, who yeah I really wanted to know how it went down when Claire had the baby. The time jump at the end of last season (with Brianna being an adult) made me wonder if we'd ever actually SEE what happened shortly after she returned. So I was glad to see it.

reply

I don't think it's so much that we are watching Claire's adjustment to her new life, as we are seeing what her life is like and who she is and who she becomes during the 20 years that she and Jamie spend apart. When we see her at the end of Season 2, she is not the same person she was when she left Jamie.

I'm looking forward to seeing Claire during these 20 years. I'm also excited to see Bree growing up.

reply

Agree completely. I feel exactly the same (S1 - Fantastic, S2= Rubish). I have not seen the rest of S3 yet.mm

reply

I watched it and I like the new episode but I feel so bad for Randall, Claire's husband.

reply

I'm going to assume none of the posters have read the books. All of these questions are addressed in the books. Book 3-Voyager is one of the best. Changes the whole series and the direction of our characters.

Just hold on Vicky, you won't feel bad for Frank Randall for too long! :)

reply

Thanks. I read the first book actually but it was quite some time ago even before the show so.... I don't remember a lot.

reply

I was going to say the same thing. As a book reader, it's hard for me to feel sorry for Frank. I will admit, though, the show has helped me dislike him a little less.

reply

It's funny this is brought up, because in the books I could totally do without Frank. The show makes me ache for him. He truly isn't a bad man at ALL and didn't deserve to have his wife stolen in time and then taken from him. Claire had no control over it either, but somehow reading the books at times you feel more on Claire's side and feel like Frank's an ass. He's really not. He's practically a Saint.

It was so sad visually seeing the scenes where Rupert and the other men were executed. (Well, not seeing the physical action but knowing it was happening.)

*SPOILERS below for those who haven't read the books**

I honestly, and maybe only because as a book reader I know what happens, wish we could skip ahead to when she reunites with Jaimie and get that over with..because I'm dying to see the scene where Bri meets Jaimie. I'm looking forward to that the most. That's not going to be for SO long at this point haha. I personally just finished the 5th book and dear god that felt like the longest of all of them AND my least favorite.

reply

Oh, me too. Can't wait for that them to meet!

I enjoyed "The Fiery Cross," but those first few chapters were SO INSANELY LONG! I loved "A Breath of Snow and Ashes."

reply

I have to agree that once I got past the gathering and wedding it wasn't nearly as bad LOL!

reply

I have not gone thru Season 2 yet. I am just *not* enjoying all the bits in France at all. I think I have watched about 3 episodes and just do not have in it me to continue. BTW: I loved S1 totally.

reply

If anything, I think it would have been very boring to just be in Scotland the whole time. France provided a nice change of scenery.

reply

Perhaps, but the story was lacking so much. Just didn't enjoy it. The fun of Claire and whatever his name is were/are good together and in S2 they were well separated. They managed to live in France without any issue with language, etc. never mind Claire should be dead of some disease already but we can forgive that one.

May be I will give it another go.

reply

"The fun of Claire and whatever his name is"

Do you mean Jamie? Because if you mean Frank, that's just a different story altogether.

"They managed to live in France without any issue with language, etc."

Well, yes, but it's explained. Jamie lived in France for a time before he met Claire. He also has an ear for languages and was well tutored as a youth. Claire was raised by her uncle, an archaeologist, and traveled quite a bit. Both speak French fluently.

"... never mind Claire should be dead of some disease already but we can forgive that one."

Why would she be dead? In the book, it's explained that evolution has given her many immunities to common diseases of the past. Also, she does have some 20th century immunizations, thus, she can't catch Small Pox.

I don’t mean to be snarky. I'm just really curious and would love to know what you meant.

reply

Thanks for the explanation of various issue I had. At least someone pays attention compared to me. ;-)

Of the few episodes I have seen of S2, not enjoyable at all. Perhaps, when I am bored again I will give it a go.

Honestly, I didn't so much read "Dragonfly in Amber," as I mostly just listened to the audiobook. Davina Porter does an amazing job!!! I read some of it, but it's not my favorite book. The Paris parts kind of drag.

About halfway through the book (and the show!) they return to Scotland. It gets much better after that!!!
