Why make Jane so obnoxious?

What's the agenda of that?

He's made nearly some sort of romantic hero, and she, she just goes around blabbing about god, ffs, she married an atheist, how devout can she really be? Then she goes all neurotic and cheats on him - I can understand her needing some action, nothing wrong about that, but the way they went about it, made it so pathetic, made her look so pathetic. I'm sure he wouldn't have even minded.

They even made "it's american" sound like she's dimwitted :(

She never cheated on him in the physical sense. She was having an emotional affair without realizing it, and put an end to it when she saw where it was going, even though she knew her marriage to Stephen was falling apart. She kept going because she felt her place in life was to take care of him, regardless of her own happiness - that's pretty damn heroic, in my opinion. She didn't return to the affair until after they ended the marriage and it was clear Stephen was developing feelings for someone else himself.

actually she did have a physical relationship with the other man while shd was still married to hawking - he even lived in the same house with them. hAwking found the situation very difficult to cope with.

She did not come over as obnoxious to me - in fact she came over as unbelievably saintly. She did not 'blab' about God but merely voiced her opinions - and she fully accepted his atheism - in fact defended it to some degree. I personally am able to empathise with her enormous challenge. She fell in love but the man she fell in love with was destroyed by a crippling disease. She stood by him for far longer than she thought she would need to initially and had his children. As far as I see it she was an admirable person with normal human emotions and feelings and I personally would not like to judge anybody who had such challenges. Also, why do you say she cheated on him? There is no suggestion she did - in fact my feeling was that Stephen was entirely suspecting that she would which caused some tension - but did she? I was not led to beleive so by this film and do not know the truth and so again cannot judge. Personally I would be very happy to have someone like Jane.

I don't know about obnoxious, and I don't know what she was like in real life, but I really struggled with this character. I just didn't like her. All the way through, from start to finish, I struggled with Jane. There seemed to be nothing whatsoever that was endearing. 

as a disabled person myself, i also struggle with her. there are times she treated stephen like her 4th child and resented him for it. if she hated having to take care of him so much, why not refuse the trach and let him die? it's a very conflicting film because ultimately she was DEFINITELY having an emotional affair, who knows if a physical one and then he left her for his nurse. it could be seen as cruel or could be seen as giving her a break because he felt the burden from her.

I think he was giving her an out.

Wow I didn't realize Jonathan was living with them at one point.

I just finished watching this on HBO and came here to see what others thought about Jane. I feel similarly to what you've stated. At first I really liked her and found her to be strong and admirable. But the longer the film went on, the less I liked her. I can understand her emotions and don't feel a heavy judgment against her, but I definitely struggled with her character from around the midway point on.
