Zack Snyder: Anyone Surprised By Batman Killing Needs to 'Wake the F*ck Up'

A Reddit video shows the director answering questions at a charity event screening director's cuts of several of his films. At the Q&A for Watchmen, Snyder explained how that film colors his work and should influence how it's understood. He used the example of Batman killing, saying, “Someone says to me: [Ben Affleck’s] Batman killed a guy. I’m like, ‘Fuck, really? Wake the fuck up.'"

Snyder is 50 years old and he talks like this?

"I guess that’s what I’m saying. Once you've lost your virginity to this fucking movie and then you come and say to me something about like ‘my superhero wouldn’t do that.' I’m like ‘Are you serious?’ I’m like down the fucking road on that. It’s a cool point of view to be like ‘my heroes are still innocent. My heroes didn't fucking lie to America. My heroes didn't embezzle money from their corporations. My heroes didn't commit any atrocities.' That’s cool. But you’re living in a fucking dream world.”

The man sounds like a 14 year old and not a particularly smart 14 year old at that.

Why Zack Snyder Is Wrong About Batman

There is no reason to be Batman if he kills people.

Anyone can kill people so there's is no need to dress up in a costume and be a hero. He doesn't kill people because he was the victim of a murder and doesn't like murder and doesn't want anyone else to experience it.

That's why he fights crime.

It's the basic Batman story.

The failure is in the movies. No movie ever shows him using science fiction level weapons that are nonlethal. Batman is a science fiction character and all the attempts to make him "realistic" are stupid. Batman could not exist in the modern world with anything near our technology. If he did he would have to murder people to survive.

But Batman doesn't kill because he witnessed his parents murder when he was a kid. That's always been part of his story, and why he's so against killing.

If Snyder wanted to go in a different direction in his movies, that's one thing. But he could at least explain his thought process behind such a radical and controversial change. Rather than just go; "Waaaah! Wake up."
