On Friday nights, hospitals tend to be very busy from alcohol related injuries from people just hurting themselves etc. so it really pissed me off that the hospital was so empty after a night when violence was legal.

I know it's a movie, I know it's an unrealistic concept but out of everything this seemed to annoy me the most. I liked the movie, just as a "see once and forget" kind of movie, but I would have really been pleased to see hundreds of people trying to get into the hospital.

Would be interesting. I wouldnt be suprised if there were supplemental laws though. Such as attacking a hospital itself is illegal, patients already in the hospital would probably have immunity as well

It does make sense that certain institutions are off-limits during the purge, such as hospitals, retirement homes, etc.

THAT surprised you? It doesn't surprise me. Any hospital would need TREMENDOUS security to protect the numerous people inside from purgers. Look how easy it is to get people to go on strike, never mind if their LIFE is on the line.

It's stated that no emergency services (police, fire, ambulance)is available during the purge, so it's safe to say that hospitals are closed shut. I would imagine they would prepare with patients ahead of time. They also mention that the banks move all their money ahead of time and shut wall street down so I think it's the same with hospitals. Plus when they take him in the morning, there are lots of people pulling up as well.

Now that you describe those details and the enormous headaches (and costs) involved, the Purge's premise does seem more ridiculous the more you think about it. In real life, moving all of those patients out (for every hospital in America!) would be near impossible. Move them to where? And for just one night? Who would ever vote for this?

But this franchise is still a fun and zany "What if?" type of thing. Maybe the filmmakers were trying to show us some future authoritarian government that creates policies and laws like "the annual Purge" that are completely out of the voter's control.

The USA would be far richer, so it would be a lot cheaper to do all those crazy things you mentioned. You'd be surprised how expensive a human life is, especially human life like those incarcerated for their whole lives, among others.

Tax dollars would go straight back into the system and not be used on inmates (for example), which would have a butterfly effect on everything else, causing the prices of everything to shoot straight down.

Meaning transferring patients out of every hospital to remote location 'hospitals' (which again would be bought and paid for by the tax payer, but they can now easily afford it) would be a dandy, as long as you started it a couple of weeks in advance.
