What I thought Louis was going to do

Nina balls him out for not getting decent footage. Even from when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought Louis was going to commit a murder (or pay someone else to) in order to get "exclusive footage".

Did anyone else think this is where it was heading?

reply

Yes, I expecting the movie to go darker. To me it felt the movie needed more shock value.

reply

Yes, the way Gyllenhal portrayed him suggested it would take a darker turn.

Well, he came pretty damn close. He basically set up Rick's murder. Some of it was "luck", but most of it was him putting the poor guy directly in the line of fire.

"What race are you? If you don't tell me I'll just...assume the worst."

reply

Yes, that's true.

He absolutely murdered Rick. He said the guy was dead, and clearly he was not. Then he lectured Rick that he deserved it, while he was dying.

I thought the same thing. That would have made the movie better, actually. Him committing crimes in order to be the first one on the scene(s).

Not exactly from the trailer, however this was the impression I got when I first watched the film. Like someone else already mentioned, he did come that close to doing it after all. But I must say, I don’t think him committing actual murder would have necessarily made this a, say, more impactful film. It’s plenty effective the way it is.

He basically killed Joe loader put him out of commission, stage the police getting ambushed then killed Rick

I expected that too, but then the movie would be Elliot Carver (the Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies) The Early Years.

While I think it would be a natural extension of Louis’ character to start committing crimes to film, I think Gilroy wanted to keep the film more grounded and relevant to the current state of the media.

The open ending suggests that’s where Louis might progress to next with his new ‘team’.
