Am I The Only One?

Who didn't like Nightcrawler? I just rented it and watched with solid expectations and was very disappointed. Sure, the directing and acting are all very good but I found nearly all the characters to be unlikeable with the exception of Lou's partner and plus a very anti-climatic ending, and on top of all that, a decent amount of plot holes. I understand why it would purposely have unlikeable characters as your lead is a sociopath, but even compared to other sociopaths in film like Patrick Bateman, at least he was pretty hilarious and deliriously entertaining to watch.

Overall, I was sorely disappointed and didn't care for the film. I am not going to be one of those ridiculous posters and say it was one of the worst films ever but I will call it the most overrated film of 2014. 4/10 for me.

Just watched it and Im with you. I felt exactly the same thing. See my recent post and review. One word: Disappointing.

Never understood why you had to like the main character in a movie. Are you looking for a friend or are you looking for a good movie?

reply

I never said I have to have a character I like in a movie but every movie should have a character that is interesting and doesn't annoy the hell out of you. Hell, my favorite character in No Country for Old Men is Anton Chigurh, also, Gary Oldman's character was very entertaining and wonderfully acted in Leon. Gyllenhall's character is very annoying and just a pain to watch. Patrick Bateman and his brother Jason Bateman in American Psycho/Rules of Attraction are much better sociopaths, just an example.

I thought it was OK but marred somewhat by Gyllenhall looking like Jim Dale in Carry on Screaming when he takes the transmogrification potion....

Marlon, Claudia and Dimby the cats 1989-2005, 2007 and 2010.

I don't mind unlikable characters as long as they are entertaining and believable – that's why I love film noir – but I found the characters here neither. This film tries very hard, perhaps too hard, to make a statement about ... well, something, I guess. After all the raves I read about this film, I was very disappointed. 5/10 stars from me.

I don't Lou was supposed to be likeable, he did fit the anti-hero character pretty well. Characters don't need to be likeable, just interesting.

Absolutely agreed, I know I just mentioned likeable characters but some of my favorite films of all time are There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, etc. which some of the characters are not good people by any means but interesting to watch. Jake Gyllenhaal's character was an emo annoying unlikeable boring character whose most interesting action was smashing a mirror and yelling at it. Not a fan of this film or his character.

Fair enough. I was fascinated by the insistence of his character, and the way he manipulated and harassed people without being overly physical... but, each to their own. 

Can't help you there. I loved it. One of the few films of the decade I gave a 10.
