Amy v Montage of Heck

I've seen both films now and I have to say for me, Amy puts MoH to shame. With MoH it feels like it is trying to be so cool and artsy, with Amy it's a simple yet very well done documentary which doesn't require any frills or fancy animated sequences to carry it.

When I initially saw MoH I thought it was good but seeing Amy has just made me wonder how much better MoH may have been if they'd kept things simple. Personally, I think the director of MoH made his film with awards in mind whereas the guy who made Amy just wanted to make an accurate portrayel of Amy and show people exactly who she was and how her downward spiral started.

I'd just be interested to know if anyone else feels as I do on this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying MoH is complete rubbish and not worth watching, I just feel that Amy outshines it.

I don't even think that you saw my own post about this subject when you wrote this post.
I titled it, "Everything that Montage of Heck should have been" because I agree with everything that you wrote. For whatever reason, like you, I started focusing on MOH's shortcomings as I watched this awesome doc.



I am a fan of Nirvana and Amy Winehouse, although in terms of music they are polar opposite! To me HECK was more of an art film, a unique experience in which you were supposed to feel as if you were in Cobain's mind. I think the visual style mixed in with the music and interview was brilliantly unconventional and somewhat disturbing. The director has even said in interviews that he wanted to make something like THE WALL but for this generation.

AMY is a more straight forward biography meant to shed some much needed light on the life of such a talented yet tragic singer/songwriter. I loved that the entire film was composed of never before seen archival footage with audio interviews to guide us through.

I highly rank both of them among my all time favourite films, because both of them brilliant beyond words.
