Good, but not great like many are making it out to be.
I loved The Florida Project and Red Rocket so naturally I was looking forward to this. While I liked it, I do think it's probably the weakest of Sean Bakers movies so far. There are good performances and it's funnier than I expected it to be, but I found the story to not really be anything special and it pretty much goes where you would expect a Sean Baker movie to go for the most part.
I thought Madison was good, but performance was kind of one note until the third act and her character was pretty underdeveloped. I felt no reason to really be rooting for her and we don't even ever get to really know anything about her character either. I know there is a lot of talk about her getting an Oscar nom, but I personally didn't think it was that impressive. The performances of the Russian gangsters were good as well.
I think the big thing that hurts this movie is the runtime and pacing. There comes a point in the 2nd half where it pretty much becomes a screwball comedy and starts relying on a lot of repetitive almost slapstick like humor that got old to me fast. There is also a section of the story that goes on way too long and it really starts to drag and found myself bored. They could've easily cut almost half an hour of it out and it would've flowed so much better.
I still enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say it's one of the best movies I've seen this year and certainly not Bakers best work by a mile. I have a feeling once this gets a wide release you are going to see a lot of people complaining that is one of the more overrated movies of the year.
