I personally prefer season 2.
shareI think all the seasons are brilliant in their own way.
shareBilly Bob Thortonš
shareI liked Season 2, but agree that it wasn't as good as S1.
However, I think S3 is definitely brilliant.
ASK ME WHY!
What would you say is brilliant about it?
I for one, found many scenes cringeworthy with the overt tip of the hat to the Coen Bros. as well as the verbatim dialogue given to various characters. It's not a terrible show and the plot line is very intriguing, but I just don't buy into the idea of making a series that is devoted to all things Coen Brothers. If you notice anything about Coen Bros is that they don't retread over the same material. I understand that they produced this series and gave Hawley the greenlight to write it, but I guess that's their way of avoiding taking the credit for the retread?
That ending was crazy, where the shadow thrusts over VM Varga. Symbolizing he actually escaped in my opinion. It was a theatrical oldschool style display that at first I hated but I loved.
There's a conversation between Gloria Burgle and her son about the evil and good in the world. I don't remember the whole conversation but that was a key element to the forces of good vs evil in that season.
Another thing I loved was how much power VM Varga had. I felt like this show really took it to another level in terms of "Badass / Power" Varga had. He was basically untouchable! From that setup with Nikki and having an entire lobby full of people wearing the same coat, to the IRS notifications, to setting up someone to take the wrap for all those murders while Emmit was trying to confess, to ultimately being above homeland security and any government level [with the ending]
Most shows have bad guys that don't reach that level of power if you ask me. It's either Street, Political, or Corporate levels of bad guy. He encompassed all 3
Not to mention the guy who played him killed the show [David Thewlis]
Another thing too, the power of women in this show! Also, It didn't dawn on me until I was reading another review of it. You're totally made to believe from the very get go that Nikki didn't really love Ray and just was with him to get the money he seemed to want. Which was totally false, she DID love him and fought for justice for him until the very end
Those are some things I thought were brilliant about it. Not to mention too, that russian fairy tale of peter and the wolf I think it was, that added another layer of coolness to it
I have to agree. S1 was phenomenal but the show has gotten ridiculously pretentious since then.
shareI do not agree. I wouldn't go so far as saying I disliked season 1, but it didn't find it all that impressive, at least compared to the film, that is. And I may be in the minority here, but I particularly wasn't impressed with the character of Malvo, played by Billy Bob Thornton. The part was obviously written to appeal to BBT's vanity, a super-villain character who's always in control of every situation and can out-wit everyone else. Those kind of characters have become an annoying cliche' in Crime/Thriller dramas for the past twenty years or so.
Maybe my criticisms are justified, or maybe they're influenced by my liking the film version of Fargo so much I was biased against the way they re-told the story.
Anyway, I much preferred seasons 2 and 3, especially 3 where I felt the show finally hit it's groove. Looking forward to season 4 next year.
"And I may be in the minority here, but I particularly wasn't impressed with the character of Malvo, played by Billy Bob Thornton"
Yeah, I have to agree with what you said about his character. Thornton's acting was spot on, but the character really didn't appeal to me. Honestly, he doesn't seem to have any moral values and kills people for the sake of killing people. And yeah, this type of flawless above everyone characters get annoying quite fast.
Agreed, Thornton's powerhouse performance was unforgettable. You could say the show peaked too early, at that point anything after that would seem disappointing.
shareYes, because of Billy Bob's and Martin Freeman's performances, and that story, it grabbed me.
I would still not like the other seasons the same way if they would have aired first.
It's like its a totally different show compared to season 1.
