Best action sequence in history?

The church scene... Wow. Now I haven't seen all the films out there but I have seen a lot and no film had anything I compare to this, The guitar solo from free bird, the brutality and the gore. The closest thing is the matrix but it's not near to it at all. My action dreams come true and just when you think he gets out... Well you know what happens. Astonishing one of the best experiences in film I've had.

It's up there as one of the most memorable fight scenes...thanks for telling me who did the music during the scene....REALLY went well with the scene!

reply

It was ok. Kind of reminded me of Shaun of the Dead. Preferred that movie to this one.
John Woo's older action sequences were some of the best I've seen.

- or so the Germans would have us believe...

I know, right!? When the music started up I was jumping up and down on the couch! So Awesome!

It's a contender for sure.

Lots of other greats come to mind. The hall scene in Oldboy, bank robbery in Heat, (you mentioned already) the lobby scene in the Matrix, the standoff in The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, the parkour scene from Casino Royale... lots of others. Yes, the Church scene here was excellent. Best ever...? Not so sure.

I really liked this movie and I'm kind of confused why it wasn't more popular.

The action was definitely enjoyable but it's kind of not really comparable to Heat. Kingsman, Matrix and others' action is very choreographic. Stuff like Heat or Saving Private Ryan has a realism about it that doesn't have that chroreographed, ballet quality about it.

There is a bit of an "apples and oranges" quality here, yeah, you're very right.

It was just because they thread is asking "Best action sequence in history?", which, in my view, opens up all categories, from "realistic" to highly choreographed.

Even without Heat in the mix, though, you've got multiple sequences from The Matrix (lobby scene and "I know kung fu"), as well as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Yojimbo, etc.

I love Kingsman - I love the Church fight. But it is far from definitively the taker of "best action sequence in history".

It was pretty memorable, that's for certain.

Who would have thought that one of the greatest, most grisly, fight sequences in cinema would feature Colin Firth in the middle of it?

That was a true (St.) Valentine's day massacre.
